    * I guess that first paragraph is speculation?
Pretty much I'd say. They expect it, I expect it, fun. Doesn't tell us anything. =(

Even if epic chooses to release a 'show case' title again with the release of their next version of UE, at this point it's probably more likely they would choose a next Gears of War to do so. </3

Can't call it an Unreal engine if it only makes lousy, aimless, military and easy games. They'd have to rename it to Lame Engine.

Unreal Engine 4 is for massively multi core cpus and probably wont even run on the next xbox or ps. This means at least 40 but more like 80 core CPUs. This also means we'll need specially designed operating systems to properly take advantage of this number of cores. It's coming eventually but 2015 might be a little optimistic. Keep in mind if the next generation of consoles don't use this tech, then it's unlikely many games will be developed around it just for the PC. Hopefully Epic would want to do a PC only version of UT4 to demo the engine if that's the case.

        Quote:
Don’t expect to see the next generation of Unreal tech in the near future. According to Epic Games’ Mark Rein, Unreal Engine 4 won’t come out until there are “massively multi-core processors” available in consoles. We may not even see the next Unreal Engine in the next generation of consoles, he said.

Speaking with Kotaku at the DICE gaming summit, Rein said that the Unreal Engine 3 has quite a lot left to offer. “Unreal Engine 4 is designed for the day we get massively multi-core processors,” he said.

Just about every action game, from Borderlands to Batman: Arkham Asylum utilizes the UE3. There has been speculation that the engine would be ready for 2012, but it appears Rein has quelled any hopes that a new engine will be out soon – especially for this current generation of consoles.

Lol sanch3z, I actually like the accidental portmanteau word lolitics in post 11. I might put "People need to just read what was posted rather than try to find a hidden meaning in everything, this isn't 'lolitics'. - Sanch3z" in my sig.
If we're expecting another UT with the next gen consoles, then it'll be released probably years after 2015 in 2018/19! Also, I think the most important thing is that UE4 must provide a very high level of scalability, since many people in the mainstream gaming audience (where most of the profits are) are not going to have 40 cpu cores (for example) upon release of such highend hardware (except for pc enthusiasts) and the next gen consoles may not even have that many cores. Intel will probably have 16 or 20 core cpus done in 2016/18, since they have 6-8 cores done/tba in the highend range atm.
It seems Intel does cpu core upgrades in increments of 2 each year depending on their 'tick tock' scheme, so next will be 10, 12, 14 cores.
All this could mean two possible things if UE4 really is meant to be for lots of cpu cores (40 cores lol): 1. Epic makes either UT3-Part 2 or possibly UT4 on UE3.x (talking specifically about UT)
          or
          2. Epic releases UT3 expansion packs every few yrs until the next UT game is released on next gen consoles towards the end of 2018.
Oh dear that's a long hiatus! 7 yrs (about 4-5 yrs wait + 3-4 yrs development)!

where are you guys finding the information that Unreal Engine 4 will be needing something like 20-40 cores to even run? from both articles listed in this thread there was no mention that i saw of anything like that?

i was asking me the same!....40 cores??? **** we ll have to wait 10 years for that

+ lot of devellopers arent able to follow their own timing previsions on 3 or 4 years(games are always late)....how the hell will they be abble to predict anything on such long delay...lets watch and see^^

google "unreal engine" and watch the wikipedia page @ Unreal Engine4:
" in august 2005 ,when no game was using UE3, ken beaulieu announced that epic was already working on UE4.the only person workin on that was tim sweeney. Mickel caps announced that it should be ready in 2012"
...so.... next year... haha...yeah he told it !
lets hope that noone will jump through his window because they told that people can fly

                    "massively multi-core processors,” he said."

This isn't 8 or 16. This is when you use your CPU for all graphics rendering as discussed here.

This is what they are building Unreal Engine 4 around. For the day when the GPU becomes a "waste of silicon". They expected it to be here already. Intel originally planned for massively multi-core CPUs to be available in 2011 but got very delayed.

"At the Fall 2006 IntelĀ® Developer Forum, Intel senior fellow and director of the company’s corporate technology group, Justin Rattner, announced the company had developed an 80-core processor and was continuing to work on resolving data traffic, heat and latency issues and to determine ways to these chips can run existing software and operating systems. In the marketplace, the move to threading and concurrency in software likely will be pulled along by the rapid transition to multi-core architectures."

So you can see when they started working on Unreal Engine 4 they had every reason to believe we'd be running 80 cores around now and that it would make sense to release UE4 around 2012. Could we get there by 2015? Maybe (see below), but I doubt you'll see that kind of hardware in the next gen consoles. Even if it does make the consoles, the only games able to run on it will be UE4 engine games. No one else is working towards this that I've heard about.

The following is from page 2 of an interview with the 2 designers of Intel's current 48 core research only processor (the cores are pentium cores so they are slow):

X-bit labs: Do you believe that many-core CPUs (in a decade or more from now or so) will be able to process both general data and graphics?

Jon Peddie: If graphics operations can be reduced to geometric functions like tessellation and image functions like shaders, without the need for specialized processors (such as a texture processor, video scalar, or colour lookup tables). Then the answer is absolutely ‘yes’. Furthermore, I think it will happen less than five years and probably as soon as three. The reason for specialized processors is to overcome the processing time of scalar processors. With multi-core CPUs and high clock rates, we can be extravagant with the software load and run general purpose processors for highly specialized applications.

i dont know, why the hell we need 40 - 80 procesors???....just now i sow the new battlefield 3, the graphic is relay nice. I dont know why epic wont make a new UT or update the curent one with UE3.x......... Fu.. today market is only about cod, battlefield..... and epic is only about GOW and Bulletstorm now, that realy suck.

And just to throw something else into the mix, all PC fans should read this: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/gra...l-to-directx/1

Basically everyones HW is massively and deliberately underperforming, to suit MS.

Multicore is probably a long time away before cpu true efficency and useabillty!!!

Interesting coz i never even heard of a 40-80 core cpu before, that boggles my mind a little bit to be honest, but developers have been having this argument about cpu's taking over GPU instructions for a very long time now, the problem is that CPUs just cannot to the same ammount of calculations as a GPU can, and there was talk some yrs ago the actual GPUs would replace the CPU all together using multi-GPUs. But i am not sure when epic is talking about "massively multicore cpus" is quite meaning 20/40/80 core cpus, what does the current console cpus have? dual core? if that? so they are probably refering to more along the lines of an 8/12 core cpus which are just around the corner, pc's have been on quad cores for a very long time now, 6 cores are still pretty un-popular on the scale of things plus the price on some of these intel chips is insane, like i7 980X, a cool grand for just a cpu, thats the price on an entire machine, and untill these prices do drop, massively multicore cpus is more of a dream in 2020.
