UT 2004 is alive for Onslaught and Invasion-RPG. People who want to play DM are probably playing it on UT99.

The Onslaught game is great in UT 2004 if you give it a chance and learn the game. The tanks you are talking about are custom vehicles on custom maps (something you never see in UT3). The tanks are fine once you learn the game and the those special tanks are on every map.

UT99 I just don't like. QuakeLive feels more faster and more responsive to my input. I can't tell if I am making combos or not because the shock primary impact also makes a shockwave type animation. Also triprox **** me off in ut3, let alone ut99's hexarox. I mean, six rockets, really. That's just over the top.
There are UT99 servers that play at faster speeds, such as the all-Face servers. One thing you'll find in UT99 that you won't find in UT3 is active capture-the-flag PUG matches.

The UI is fine (which seems to be your main case vs ut3 as it's what you mention the most). Not perfect but it works. And you can always hit F10 and type a command if you don't want to navigate it. Yes before "Black Edition" the UI was really bad, with no real options for customising the graphics. But they fixed that. There is also that mod to improve it further. On top of this you spend less than 0.5% of your total time using the UI. All the casual gamers I know who use to play ut99 and ut04 liked ut3 just as much. They no longer play, but they only played the first 2 for 1 or 2 years also.
It's improved from where it was at release, but I still think it's clunky and slow and has a consolized feel to it. Also, you still can't pull up the server browser while you are on a server.

I think UT3 did badly for the exact same reason Quake4 has no players. People don't like change.
I don't think that was its problem. It's the fact that it was released in what felt like a beta-state was the problem. If it had been released in its current state it might have done better.

As for the population of the 2 games 2 years after release, you can't do that comparison fairly. UT99 never had to please fans of a previous version nor did it have as many games to compete with.
UT99 had powerhouses Quake III and Half-Life to compete with. It also had to please Unreal players.

I think it's a fully fair comparison. If anything, UT 2004 would have an advantage of UT99 in these regards and UT3 would have an advantage over both UT99 and UT 2004. It seems like part of how you judge the success of a game should be based on how many players it brings over from the previous games. If a sequel is really good, if it's better than its predecessor (which it should be), then almost all of the fans of the predecessor could be expected to purchase it and play it.

If someone prefers UT3 to the previous games, that's fine. Everyone's entitled to play what they want. However, facts are facts, and the fact of the matter is that UT3 proved to be an abject failure compared to its predecessors.

Honestly every ONS server I played on was bs. One map had over a dozen plasma tanks going around, another had a redeemer at every single node and so on. Customisation isn't always good it seems. Also another thing that bugged me is it seems to be nothing but hitscan.

As for what ut3 was like at release, I can' really comment on that. I got the game maybe some time around mid 2008 and didn't play even semi-seriously until the game was dying (long after titan-pack). So maybe you're right. But still ut3 is my favourite by far despite there being things I dislike about it.

Anyway, this is a ut3 forum. For ut3. I think every one here knows by now you love ut99 the most and don't like ut3 very much You don't have to keep on reminding us. Stop trying to steal our newbies.

A very good argument. Well said. We should try to spark interest in THIS game else there won't be a sequel. I love the UT and U series and I don't want that it dies (that's the case right now, this game is dying! ).

If we always say "the previous UT titles were WAY better, buy and play them instead of this one" we won't get new players! More and more players are leaving the game and when I wanted to play a nice vCTF match I couldn't find ANY full server. ALL servers were empty -over the whole day!

I play the other UTs as well and I like them a bit more than UT3 as well but I play UT3 because I like this game too. The other UTs might be better but UT3 is still an UT and it makes a lot of fun although there are some bugs. What I want to say with this is that I don't like UT3 as much as the other UTs but I don't want that this game dies only because it is a bit worse than its predecessor. It's still a game which is worth to be an UT title and ...

Uhm.. I forgot what I actually wanted to say...

Well, you see what I think: We need to save the UT series!

          IT MUST NOT DIE!

The GDawwg DM server has the weapons and amps everywhere in those custom maps. It's loads of fun and has wicked fast redirect. Those are meat grinder maps, good for practice, training, and warmup. Plus, there are usually some very good and experienced players in the mix as well.

If you see BTA under TDM (it's like TAM), give it a try, you never know till you do.
nope... the Gdawwg server is a POOR excuse of a server.. the maps are terrible, the designer clearly hasn't used kismet or barely any use of Static Meshes...

putting pickups everywhere doesnt == fun....

Out of my collection of 450 DM maps i can only think of about 3 that have weapon\pickup overboard syndrome. I guess it could of course be that there is more and these are the ones in the collection i rarely play and forgot about.... lol.

Either way theres a lot of decent custom maps out there.

              w00t azurescorch you tell them
