Anyone Tired of Lag being the REAL Enemy?

I must say that there are alot of good servers around Europe, so I ain't complaining..
But i feel your pain, i used to play 2k3 lowgrav for years on American servers, always ping 150.. I got used to it though, and in the end i owned the **** out of them lol, it was like an extra challenge
What i do experience alot on servers is lag, dispite the low ping.. I think UT3 is a pretty heavy game to run on a server.

Basically on every tick every projectile would need to check against players unlagged according to the projectile owner's ping. And here it gets complicated as projectiles would need to perform their physics manually. Also, should they use the ping when they were fired, which might be different fro each projectile, or the current ping?
I only did Instagib for now because it's the easiest thing to do. Maybe I'll have a look at regular weapons later, but custom weapons will probably never be supported.

Have u guys tried playing unreal and have a download running at the same time?
I had some fun with that a couple of years ago in UT2004.
I had a torrent downloading and my ping was between 600 - 300 and i was very laggy.
even when i walked against the flag i sometimes lagged through it so i had to try to walk to get the flag 2 or 3 times before i succeeded but one i got it nobody could shoot me
We played with lowgrav and i had my gaming friends on teamspeak and i lagged so much that 1 second i could be 5 meters up in the air the next second i could be running on the floor. it was hilarious but i didnt get killed and i got through the whole map and scored
of course i couldnt shoot anyone either but it didnt matter, if i got the flag i could just run away

I have seen far worse than 120. A guy in 2k4 played for about 2 years on a dial-up connection and had about a 180-200 ping and still did well. I played with a 135 ping when I had DSL for a few months.
Get a better connection for learn to get good with it, don't punish others, that is idiotic.
This is one of those threads I wish I had never clicked on so I didn't have to see nubs and there "ideas"
PS
Lotus needs to do new net for UT3so sad he is gone.

Lag and ping are not the same thing. Ping tells you how long a packet takes to and from a server but lag is caused by numerous things and can be momentary or long lasting. Ping can sometimes be a good indication of possible lag but that's about it. You can have a decent ping but experience lag. Mostly lag will be a local issue or even a connection issue. There is no setting on the server to control lag for the clients. You can set min and max ping but again ping is not lag. I could go on for hours giving examples of things that will cause client-side lag or lag due to your ISP connection. Admins can't adjust your connection or all the things that cause lag on your machine and are usually dead last in a long long list of culprits to blame.
Ping is gauged in milliseconds, electrons flow through wires at nearly light speed and electrons converted to pulses will travel through fiber-optic cables at light speed. If you had a fiber-optic cable with no stops along the way it would take a light pulse about 8ms to go from the west coast to the east coast of the USA. Now add in a few dozen switches (hops) between the coasts where the info is converted back and forth from fiber to wire and back again (because there are no light based electronic circuits yet) and you easily quadrupple the time it takes from coast to coast. Now lets say one of those switching stations is a host server with a lot of traffic and now your packets have to wait their turn adding even more milliseconds to the equation and you can start to see how ping adds up over distance. Ping will fluctuate with net traffic both local and distant and can spike all across the net or just because of one of the switches along it's path. So even setting min and max ping is no guarantee that you'll get better overall performance by adjusting these settings.
One cool way around some of the ping issues is to get on a network made just for gaming. GameRail is the only one I'm aware of but who knows there might be others by now. What Gamerail does is bypasses all those switches using unused old fiber lines that were laid down many years ago before more modern fiber cables came along to replace them. The system only works if your host ISP has partnered with GamRail. Even if they have you still may have several hops between you and the spot where your host plugs into the GameRail network. Overall though it should avoid a lot of the network traffic though it comes at a monthly price. I'm not sure what they are charging but if you just have to have the best ping in town it might be worth your time and money to look into it. *Edit I just googled GameRail and sadly they are no longer in existance. http://www.datacenterknowledge.com/a...rk-shuts-down/

Lag for me is something that have to take effect cuz i've never ever played with a ping less than 100 or 90... in UT3 a new friend has joined the lag which is my processor, it's not that powerfull to run UT3 but soon i'll remove that guy so only lag will stay on top... see how loyal ?

i dont see anything really wrong about that picture. niagranoriega is one of our communitie's regulars and good players. i wonder what really good players you a talking about. as for higher ping that just about the same as normal ping exept you have to lead your target however much more and dodge sooner so to the server you get out of the way of that rocket comming for you. you can get used to it and still do ok. ive never really had a huge problem with lag.

Nowadays a lot people think ping = lag... ....man, what have we come to? We cannot even communicate about technical problems any longer because people write about the wrong things.
