    Lost Faith In Steam

    Hello All,

I'm new to Steam, don't quite know th ins and outs of the system, so when I heard about the Titan Pack being released, I wanted to buy UT3 to play it. Then I saw that UT3 had been discounted, so since I never used Steam before I decided to try it. I paid for this product 3 days ago and its still not finished, I wanted to play this at least 4 hours after the initialization of the download.

Now what I want to know, from veteran users of Steam. Does this usually occur on Steam? These busy and slow downloads or is this a one in a thousand occurrences.

I want to know this, because if it's good, I want to start buying games through Steam, as games are attached to the account, so you can dload and install to any computer, and no need for boxes!

I'm new to Steam also. I think the reason it's so slow is right now is people can download and play UT3 for free this weekend. The Steam servers are probably swamped with people trying to get the free version. Plus, everyone is trying to update their copies to the new 2.0 patch and Titan pack.

I know that, but I just want to know For every new release, does Valve prepare themselves for it? Because from this, they haven't.

To answer your question, this is NOT a 1/1000 occurence but neither does it happen often. Its usually a 1/100 thing when something BIG gets released and many ppl try getting it on 1 day.

To my experience the vast majority of the time the Steam servers are FASTER than any site....I've gotten 2MB/sec CONSISTENTLY with them many times which no site can get. In fact when it starts downloading it overloads my internet so much no web pages work almost which is bizzare lol but it IS fast as ****. This weekend had the FREE UT3 being released, the 1.3GB update that the old users needed to install, and IN ADDITION, a lot of UT3 folks switched their copies to STEAM (from boxed ones) due to achivements. Those folks did not know how to transfer their installations so they just started downloading it again...that's 10+GB per user. That's why the servers have been **** right now.

Oh ok, can you also tell me if it gets THIS bad during new releases? How about when FEAR2 came out? I bought the boxed PC version.

I downloaded UT3 through Steam twice, each time it took no more than a matter of hours.

Did you know you can change your mirror if it's going slowly? It might help.

The fact is the free weekend is over and I'm downloading the Titan Pack at a whopping 40KB/s ... Ahahah. Fortunately I have the retail version. And the box is nice also

Question: How do you lose faith in something you're new to?

The reason for the slow service was actually a combination of the free trial, titan pack, and the release of Empire: Total War. Had Empire come out another weekend, the free weekend would have gone much more smoothly.

Yeah...I never ever had slow DL speeds for anything and I got over 35 games on steam and DL'ed them each more than once.

THe problem is more to do with the massive, 2 DVD Empire total war being released on Friday, than it is to do with UT3.

So Steam got an unprecedented bandwidth squeeze this weekend. It means that steam is growing faster than it anticipated, and quite simply, ran out of bandwidth.
