I would happily pay for the Titan update/expansion pack

I just wanted to point out that I'm sure it took lots of man hours and money to create this new update. I am ecstatic that it's free on PSN. That being said, I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that I would have no problems paying 5 or 10 dollars for regularly released Epic created DLC.

I would have probably not minded putting out a little bit of cash for the huge patch and expansion stuff. As for stuff being regularly released. It wouldn't happen. I also wouldn't pay for it.

And that's the very reason that console gaming is going down the drain. Because companies are seeing they can $5 and $10 dollar you to death for every least little thing they decide to add, and people actually pay for it. Look, when you shell out $60 for a game, the last thing you want is it turning into a money pit. I cannot for the life of me understand this desire to pay for everything. It doesn't make a game better, but instead, encourages companies to "leave out details" because they know they can get suckers to pay extra dollars for it after you have already paid for the game.

Companies doing that has almost completely made up my mind that I'm done with consoles after the PS3 has run it's course. I've got several games like that now, and I can assure you the companies that produced those games will never sell me another title of any sort. If it means I eventually get out of gaming all together, then so be it.

There's a difference between a company charging for content that is above and beyond the scope of the original game (examples would be this, Warhawk Expansions, Mappacks to keep the online community alive, Burnout's Party Pack or Bike Pack, etc) and companies intentionally leaving out content in order to sell it later (Capcom/Namco charging for costumes in their fighting games, Namco selling an unlock code to give you access to a character that was on the disc when it shipped, or charging for extra levels/maps within a month of the original release). I can get behind paying for something that has perceived value, when I bought Burnout, I had no expectations of a Party pack or a Bike pack, I would pay for that DLC. When I bought Soul Calibur IV I had no intentions of paying for costume pieces and characters that were already on the disc and I still refuse to, people that support those business models are the ones ruining console gaming.

I think it was more of a wise move to make the expansion free. I read more negative comments about UT3 than positive across the board. On top of this the poor online player numbers show that something needs to be done to revive the game and get more peeps playing it.
If they had charged for the expansion it would have ****** off the already generally unhappy community more.
Making it free will generate a lot more interest and hopefully get people back who would otherwise ignore the expansion because they'd have to pay for it.

I still believe in that you pay for something ONCE and if an addon is as big as the original then yes charge for it, otherwise make it free. I'm against the whole paid subscription method that's being used by many MMORPG companies(ala Blizzard - WoW).
I refuse to purchase any game that is subscription based!

I understand where you are coming from there. But I still think it fosters the same mentality that the companies can plan those extra levels before the games release, and deliberately hold them out (hence you wouldn't know about them) to do an extra cash grab later on.

The other problem this leads to is the community then becomes fragmented. If many of the people move on to play the purchased content in a multiplayer game, then you have half of the people who don't have it and get bored when the servers get less full.

I guess I'm just old school where you got maps and models for free and had huge amounts of content produced by the community. It's kinda hard to tell end users who lived through those days that you have to pay for every little thing you add to a game.

I think Epic is doing the right thing here though because they are addressing problems people have had with UTIII and at the same time, adding some value to it. They are setting the standard that all other companies should follow.

I remember one month after Gears or War 2 came out, they came out with a 3 map pack worth 800 microsoft points, which is like $5 to $10. That is a rip off and you can tell they held those maps just so microsoft can make money. I am a little disappointed in Epic for that, but I also know it is not their fault as you can see how big this patch and titan pack is and it is FREE! That is why xbox360 is not getting it right now.

XBL and DLC is nothing but a rip off, Games makers have already said they have with held content from the games before so MS can charge a bit more for it a little later on. Paid DLC like map packs are ridiculous, I have been playing games on the PC for years and new maps for all games have always been free. I mean these people have already taken £30-40 of you for a game, then they want more money for less than a fistful of new MP maps.

I agree that the reason this new update and map pack will never come to XBL is MS don't like that it's free, it has nothing to do with size. I think that word free just doesn't sit well with the fat cats at M$. It's pure spite.

So glad I have this on PC as well, think I will sell my Xbox copy. £1.00 anyone

This is the reason I sold GoW2, my mates bought the combustible map pack, I flat out refuse on principal to do that. So I sold it and bought a new crack pipe jk

I would not mind paying a small fee for regularly released content, but it would have to be pay-per-content, not a subscription. And not until the game is finished first... patch 2.0 & the titan pack are merely a large first step towards making UT3 what it should have been at release.

I get where you're coming from, having a community split because of a paid map pack does suck. I guess it's because I'm primarily a console gamer that I tend to see it differently than most PC gamers. Last gen a lot of the stuff they're charging for now would've been included on the disc (costumes, characters, small map packs, etc) and, on principle, I will never pay for content like that and I would rather skip the game entirely (if I feel I'm being ripped off content wise) than pay for it twice. While last gen, things like the Party/Bike packs for Burnout or the 2.0 expansion for UT3 wouldn't have existed in any form on consoles and I would be more than willing to pay for something like that because I can see the value in it. I do expect proper patching, the 2.0 patch is long overdue, but the Titan expansion is going above and beyond what's required of them, I'm just glad it's free since that was the best decision for the community (even though I think it's worth a nominal fee, free will do more to bring in players).

no offence dude... but i hate people who go about saying they would be willing to pay... in the past epic made a complete and polished game and supported it for free... and it was a part of the deal... ut3 was incomplete and rushed at release so they finally finished it... you already paid for it... i dont want to pay for it again...

moreover free stuff means more players... moreover from initial reports the patches introduce new issues... so ya you dont want to be paying for broken stuff...

It was never ready for sale in anyway..... still isn't.

No way dude. I think that EA made the first step to real disaster taking money for something which should be basicly free:

The downloadable content! Man, even Bethseda follow this trend with DLC for Fallout 3.

I am realy sure that if consumers dont stand up against this trend, we will in very near future pay the PATCHES, pay per MAP,pay per skin, pay per install(which DRM pushes so hard,)....Think about it, DLC is realy a ground testing to see if average consumers are dumb enough to buy something which should be free. It is realy sad that consumers are starting to be treated like brainless sh*t which will buy for everything thats not free.(and part blame is us, for letting this happen)

Thank God, Epic is still not corrupted by this sinister big company ways...
