CaptainSnarf repliedI second Shadow]I['s advice. Vista seems to think the best time to auto defrag is when I'm running the orb

Vista turns off aero automatically when game starts up...
And dwm.exe taking up 40MB of RAM is the most I ever got..

HighCrimes repliedPower options settings will block an overclock, you actually need to set OS to allow it in a few different spots. Vista will reduce the clock of the cpu before it increases fan speed, lame. Also has a power save feature on the PCI express too, jeez. Google, man.

Shadow]I[ repliedi don't know much, but turn off automatic updating/auto defrag/auto virus/defender scan (otherwise they will hiddenly run in the background when you play games at random times and start to lag you) and disable hard drive indexing

Masaai_Warrior repliedMy main bit of advice is to make sure you have the latest DirectX End-User updates from Microsoft, that you are all patched up with all the 'performance and reliability' updates (or rather, Service Pack 1) for Vista, and that your GFX drivers are stable.
What are your specs? (this post should be in the Troubleshooting forum tbh).

If you google "speed up vista," there are a large number of pages that point out the fairly obvious things like defragmenting your HDD and simply disabling certain Aero UI features (like transparencies), if you want to keep the Aero look.
For some of the more technical and less obvious tweaks, such as modifying Vista's network throttling, there's an excellent article here.
