    UT3 an acquired taste?

OK. After playing UT3 awhile I kind of thought it sucked. I wondered why they changed this and that about the game. *****ed about the look of the game and the models and on and on. So I stopped playing it for awhile. I was playing TF2 for awhile but then for some reason I started playing UT3 again. Now that I'm playing it quit a bit I'm really starting to like it. So is UT3 the kind of game that you have to put some time in before you can really appreciate it? Seems that's the way it worked out for me. Now I'm really, really hoping they don't make any drastic changes to the core of the game play in the expansion.

To really enjoy fast pace FPS games like UT and quake you need to play a while until you understand the mechanics. As soon as you are able to kill people its fun :P.

It's the learning curve. Same as anything, until you understand the basics, your pretty much stuck. But once things start to click, then it just keeps getting better.

When I first started I hated vehicles. I would get so mad when I got ran over or something. But I started playing more and learned how to efficiently use the avril and even the vehicles, and now it doesn't bother me.

Yes. Most competitive FPSs are. UT3 even more so (once you wrap your head around the basic tactics/maneuvers it gets so much more fun).

It also took me some time to "learn" the game. As I was playing the gameplay was becoming natural to me. The less I had to concentrate on controls and stuff the more I enjoyed the game. Also I was confused how some vehicles are practically useless against another vehicles. Like manta gets owned by scorpion and Goliath gets owned by a manta (especially when you meet two mantas working together). But later I found out how smart it is. Simply there are only few vehicles that could own everything and those require teamwork to be effective.

or smart play to even the odds, goliath can force a manta into a small space or near a wall then kill it, its the little things you pickup

The OP has been on this forum since Feb of 2004, I am sure that he understands learning curve (2k4 had a larger one).

Many ut99/2k4 players had a hard time switching for various reasons. Whether it be movement changes, weapon changes or what not. So yes, it is an acquired taste, one that I have not gotten.

ya know, I kinda disagree. I played UT99 and then 2k4. I bought UT3 with a completely open mind. I was tired of the hitscan "shocktape" one-dimension which UT2k4 became (duel, tdm mind you). Man, I wanted to love UT3. I learned the new weaps and the new movement. I dropped my usage of the shield gun in all of about a week. The transition was not hard at all. I had a PC that could handle it fine. Search on my name here and you will find all kinds of posts defending UT3's gamestyle choices.

But it was not as fun. I tried and tried to love it but the problems with the game frustrated me. The aiming was (and is) terrible. The user interface was terrible. And it's not the console-ized UI I'm talking about. I'm talking about BASE capabilities. I couldn't see where my friends were playing because the browser was so bad. I couldn't use xfire either. My days of watching all the pro demos of 2k4 were over because you couldn't capture them. Managing a server was more than painful. The sounds were so messed up that when I disable the amp for 1v1, the sounds remain. There were just SO many countless problem that even tho I adapted my playstyle just fine, the game was just not as fun. I anxiously awaited patch after patch. The mountain of fixes you see in those patches are a darn good indicator at how many problems there were. The vast majority of my problems with the game STILL remain today.

After about a year, I tried 2k4 again. Man, I gotta say that 2k4 movement is fun. Say whatever you want but the variety you are given and the freedom of 2k4 was so... FUN. Yes, it makes maps larger. Yes, it has a higher learning curve. But **** - it was fun.

I stopped playing UT. I can't find games on 2k4 (which frankly even I am tired of) and I can't find anything on UT3. Even when I do, I last a couple maps at best before I get fed up again. So in retrospect, I can only speak on my own behalf, UT3 just became "not fun" for me. It didn't grow on me in spite of how much I wanted to love it.

Eggsuckingleech summed it up veery nicely.
The phrase "needs work before release" should be a mantra to Epic by now.
Only their "expansion pack" fixes of previous disasters succeeded. Make one dud....charge people for the old engine/expansion pack renamed as a new game ( albiet fixed and successful )

UT99 was an "expansion pack for a maligned game
UT04 was an expansion pack for the UT03 disaster
and now we move on to UT4 the expansion pack for UT3

Usually if I pay to get screwed, I'd expect some clothing to comeoff in a hotel room.
The majority of people espousing the great quality/smoothness of game play somehow manage to be clan people or their friends...who historically always deceived people about why servers lag or why you just need to upgrade or practice to cover for their "special files" that compensate for the glitches , poor aim code, etc.
( You can easily notice that clan/ pug servers "lag" the hardest for innocent players )

Well hopefully Epic follows their recipe for success...fix it a couple years after release by rereleasing the fixed game as a new one

aquired taste, some people still vote for kargo and corruption in 13v13, must need some sort of aquired taste to even tolorate that map with those sorts of numbers
