IIRC it was the other way round. UT2003 came 2002.

Well they about called this UT2K7 which was on the outskirts of going on to 2008, wow it would have been true for about a month.

It IS called ut2k7. Isn't that the second official name, besides UT3?

the first working name was ut2k7 and they renamed it ut3, kind of shows from epic that they didnt consider ut2k3 to be a 'real' unreal tournament. (maybe they should leave this one out of the counting when the next one hits too )

I haven't made any effort to keep track of the correlation between the Unreal Engine version numbers and the games, so someone else can comment about this.

However, Unreal maps cannot be used in UT. UT maps cannot be used in UT2003. UT2003 maps can be used in UT2004. UT2003/2004 maps cannot used in UT3. Therefore...

UT = UT1
UT2003/UT2004 = UT2
UT3 = UT3

Simplistic, but functional.
