I have owned the PS3 version of UT3 since its release. In fact before it's release here in the UK because I imported it from the US months before the UK release. However, I couldn't even tell you the last time I played it. I loved UT3 and I still own it (I couldn't bring myself to trade it). But here is what is wrong with it in my opinion and the reason I never play it:

    1. The inability to change server settings between games without stopping the server and setting it back up again. This is the only PS3 game I have experienced without this ability and it is a massive mistake in my opinion. On the fly changes to gametype etc should have been possible.

    2. Clan options.

    3. Much better mod support. Being able to install more than one mod at a time (it is just way too tedious as it is right now) and a built in mod browser with rating system. Take a look at Far Cry 2. That is more like how it should have been done. I am not a fan of Far Cry 2 but they sure made a much better effort when it comes to mod support.

    4. Automatic mod download for those joining games without the current mods installed. Again, like Far Cry 2.

    5. The ability to search for servers with custom gametypes and join them more easily.

Epic made BIG noises about the PS3 version supporting custom mods. This was supposedly the big selling point and yet it is so poorly designed and implemented that it is bordering on being laughable.

    Just my opinions.

yeah ive never had any of the issues brought up cept the mic once a while maybe once every 2-5 months all i have to do is leave and come in again and its fixed

auto aim only really works if ur really close up i dont see much of a problem with that and i dont care about split screen i play by myself i understand that point but it doesnt really matter to me like i said i play alone plus i wouldnt play properly with only half a screen i like to see if a rocket is aimed at my face

HMMMMMM...... I have both the PC and PS# versions of the game and have not had many of the issues I am reading about here. There have been a few issues with lag on the PS3 version from time to time, but I just chalked that up to the server I was on. I Have been an Unreal fan since '99 and look forward to the next installation when it is ready....... As far as the rest of the other games go...... I would take UT over any of them because the community support and massive amounts of user created content.

Couldn't have put it better myself - and Tails hit the button on pretty much every point he made.

As a father of two with another on the way and a full-time tech job, me-time comes at something of a premium

IMHO, UT3 enjoyed a lull in the PS3 stable of games which meant that it was all I played for a long time, but that's changed in recent months.

PlayStation consoles have apparently always been a pain to code for, at least initially - but as time passes & Dev teams get more familiar with the system and what it can do, the quality of the games released tends to improve, meaning that (for me at least), while UT3 was in my PS3 pretty much exclusively for 7 months, there are some exemplary games out now (Fallout 3 & Bioshock among them) which are looking far more appealing to me, at least for now.

Plus which, now Resistance 2 is out, there's a prime example of how PS3 online gaming should be (60 players? Why is UT3 limited to 16, and lags like hell when you actually get that many people on?), which only serves to highlight other flaws in UT3, such as lack of stable online environment, game lobbies, etc - and although split-screen isn't important to me, the original Resistance, a PS3 launch game, implemented it rather well so I would've thought it'd be an obvious inclusion for Unreal ...

The thing that kept me so interested in UT3 was this community & the vast array of incredible user-created content out there. Without it, I would have lost interest in the game probably within a fortnight

So - while I'm not around here much these days & UT3's taken a bit of a back seat, I've not abandoned it - had some good sessions in the past with Tails & Demon, among others; got my **** handed to me most times, but as someone who plays for fun more than anythin else, it's not so bad

I didn't know there was an expansion coming, so let's hope it addresses some of the issues people have raised. If the online aspects have been fixed, and it's a little more user-friendly (the ability to arrange and play games from inside Home would be nice!) I'll definitely be interested.

Feel free to add me on PSN - if I know far enough in advance (and no-one minds me being **** ), I'm always up for a game. I think half the problem before was that there were only really a few of us on here who talked to each other & took part in or organised games; while in most cases that involved me joining games at 1:30am UK time which was early evening for US players, I'd be only too happy to do so to get the chance to play against some good people - and keep well away from the Midway servers

    Happy New Year, people

I agree with everything Tailsnakes said, not badly written at all, Harmerty you're awesome but I disagree here, the PS3 has my living room for now, my pc isn't near there yet or hooked to it, and chat is way better. I also play and enjoy PC, both are wicked cool. Even after playing pc on my sick rig, I still want my PS3 a lot, but there are absolutely big differences. I also have friends on both platforms I like to play UT3 with, so that's a factor too... Anyways, what Tailsnakes said! Waaaaahhhhh!!!!

I don't mean lag, i dunno if its the ram alone or they just didn't optimize it enough for ps3 but it just don't look or feel right.

Now, i don't know how good your computer is but the pc version is silky smooth for me, my comp isn't the greatest but the game plays great for me... So i am thinking its on your end.
yo harmerty.. i dont know man i got a great computer i get plenty of frames per second, i think its the games engine, like i said it works fine on the console because honestly i dont set my console game expectations very high and in my opinion ut3 is one of the best console games ive ever seen, but the pc version just doesnt seem to be where i would expect it to be, playing ut2k4 off and on just reconfirms my beliefs, that game feels so much nicer.

in my opinion, and the opinion of most pc players (based on the fact the game is extremely unpopular compared to what it should be) the game failed on PC, the PC market doesnt help the situation but theres no other way to view UT3 on PC other then a failure

onslaught/warfare are both fun and ive seen some active warfare teams on these forums seems to be alot more alive then the other modes, but i prefer it without the orb to be honest

    Tailsnake - good post!

I agree that the lack of tutorials was a serious problem. For the first few months I had to let other players kill me because if I played properly it felt like I was bullying them (and, believe me, I'm /not/ good!). I also had several occasions of my own CTF team chasing me around the map because I was carrying the flag and no one else on the team had any idea what to do. For my part, I had to ask in forums about how to control some of the vehicles and had to spend a lot of time offline figuring it out by trial and error.

I too hope that the "expansion" is a new release. I think they should release it piecemeal, like Burnout. Then, each new add-on can be rolled out with tutorials and (if they get demo recording sorted out), demos of matches. That way, it won't be overwhelming for newbies and they get to see how experienced players play.

It's not really necessary to do it piecemeal with loads of tutorials - LBP has dozens of tutorials and people seem to have made the effort. But doing a Burnout will also get a lot of publicity and earn a lot of goodwill.

Since Assault, Bombing Run and Invasion have never been released for UT3 by Epic, and since no one's ever gonna get sick of free mappacks, continuous expansion could go on for ages and little cost to Epic.

Insisting that all mods are uploaded to a single location, cooked and (briefly) tested by Epic, and released through a single means might improve cross-platform community cohesion. Having an underground movement of cookers under attack from PC modders who for some reason didn't want PS3 players to see their maps was just nuts. It would also give a grief feedback mechanism and stop version clashes.

But I seem to have turned this into another "what do you want in the expansion" thread. So I'll stop.

    Tolstoy.

The PS3 version is a joke compared to the PC version. It's still missing features the PC version got almost a year ago and at this point it really seems like Epic doesn't care. PC players complained about being BETA testers for the console version, but they couldn't have done a very good job considering the PS3 version was released with all the bugs of the PC version and then a whole host of other console specific bugs.

Anyway, most players didn't have a good way to learn the game. People went online in overcrowded servers of people with bad connections and essentially rocket spammed in laggy rooms. They then they complained about the spamminess and lag and stopped playing. The campaign was useless as a tutorial; unless you had played UT games before there was nothing to teach you about the intricacies of the game (shock combos, wall dodges, dodge jumps, hammer jumps, how to use all the secondary firing modes properly, Item spawn times, all the little quirks and abilities of the vehicles). People played the game in a shallow way and thus assumed it was a shallow game and gave up on it. That's reason #1.

Then there are the people that still liked the game but were faced with a huge lack of features and glitch, after glitch, after glitch.
-There were times were I would try to join quite a few completely different servers and my PS3 would freeze and crash upon attempting to enter them (there was a point where I just gave up playing vCTF completely because it happened way too much in servers of that mode)
-Mics didn't work for the first few months of release (more than long enough for the 6 friends I convinced to buy the game with me on release to get tired of it and stop playing)
-There were a ton of issues with joining servers and hosting (I remember one point where we were trying to host a 3v3 clan match and no matter who hosted the server there was someone who would have a connection issue and not be able to join (shame too since I really wanted to play a proper clan match vs oWo))
-The lack of splitscreen even though it was a feature promised prior to release
-The inability to have clan tags (I know people with half a dozen separate accounts because they had to make a new one everytime they joined a clan)
-The fact that there were no party or leveling up systems that people are used to now meant that it was hard to get into a game with friends and noobs that were getting killed all the time had no incentive to keep playing (unlike in CoD4 where even if you did get your *** handed to you, you would level up eventually and still have some sense of accomplishment)
-There were no options to turn off the annoying auto-aim
I could go on listing for days, but simply put, the experience on PS3 was less than ideal.

On top of that, as Tolstoy mentioned, mods were horribly implemented. You need to put the maps in a complicated folder structure (which they eventually changed, which just made it worse since all the tutorials online were still based on the folder structure), you could only upload one map at a time, there was no way to set up redirect servers to help distribute maps. Even PC players are too lazy to deal with custom maps, this problem was 10 fold for PS3 players. Then there are all the issues that mods had. Custom characters **** near screwed up the game (rainbow textures on levels, invisible characters, etc), mods would sometimes conflict with each other and a whole host of other little problems. This would probably be the third major reason people stopped playing.

Most of the people that played through all of those problems slowly started to quit due to the low number of players and other, more polished games.

I think epic really blew their chance with UT3 on consoles since this was a lot of peoples first experience with the game and it was not pleasant, bringing them back wont be easy.

    To bring back players:
    #1
They need to fix all the little bugs still floating around (even after patch 1.2 there are still obvious bugs like missing textures from vehicle bullets in custom maps, hanging on the loading screen and stability issues with custom character models)

    #2
They need to teach new players how to play, run them through the basics in the campaign, provide them with an in-game encyclopedia of stats, facts and strategies, when people get better at this game they have a lot more fun than just rocket/flak spamming

    #3
Improve mod implementation, allow the uploading of more than one mod, add a mod browser, etc

    #4
The game needs to get par features for online gaming today. Clan/Clan Tag support, Party Support, Leveling up, Achivements/Trophies, matchmaking, etc

    #5
The game needs a re-release. Even though quite a bit of the launch issues have been fixed no one is coming back since the game is essentially dead. This is why I hope the expansion is a separate purchase (though at a discount price like $30 or less) and that they market it enough to generate some buzz. If all goes well, maybe they can actually get a decent community going this time.

When you look at the request list (http://gearsforums.epicgames.com/sho...d.php?t=624127) most of the requests aren't that outrageous and are generally things you'd expect the game to already have at launch, not for people to be wishing for a year after release.
great post. this was my first time with ut and dispite all the bugs i stuck with it and will always stick with it. i would also like to say that a major thing they should work on is the UI. put anything and everything in there i say.

PS3 people, try the PC version for 2 weeks and i bet you won't even look at your ps3 disk again!!
    my 2 cents:

the ps3 version plays great for a console game.
the pc version plays like *** for a pc game.

the pc version is dead, and by dead i mean theres literally only 1 dm game to join and play in.

as far as lag with 16 players... the game sucks in general with 16 players regardless of lag or not

Sadly, not everyone thinks like me nor should they, so in the end you have to hope people pick ut3 as their favourite. I think someone on the forums wrote about putting marketing for ut3 on the home beta for playstation, i think that would help out on sales for epic and possibly intice new competition to pick up a copy and give it a go.

Also ( and i know ill get flamed for this) i could care less about trophies, honestly all i care about is getting better at Ut3 , and the only achievements i want is monster kills

honestly you shouldnt get flamed for that trophies IMO are stupid ok yeah you accomplished something so what o0o you got a little trophy for it..so what i totally understand and i agree with you these new games coming out have taken the crowd away from ut3 but lets put it like this ..ut3 is a even playing field...so lets say a year from now someone buys ut3 plays it..they are on the same level playing field as the person who bought it release day...these new games and the level system is IMHO complete *** now lets say a person buys R2 a year from now...hes gunna get his *** whooped in a DM (if hes decent enough not so bad) from higher levels cause they have the bigger guns not fair...yeah he gets some exp for what he did..but.. come on...honestly

and one thing pretty much everyone is forgetting .. STOP THE **** DRAMA i can't even play the **** game without people talking trash about me i know im not the only player but seriously these people who talk trash are usually the garbage ones anyways so just get over it and just end the drama that alone would bring back alot of players

Wow, after rereading what I originally wrote again, it looks badly written and disorganized (not to mention full of grammatical and spelling errors). That's what I get for making a large post first thing in the morning after 4 hours of sleep.
