Nvidia 9800GX2

The 9800GX2 is two GPUs in SLI that occupy one slot (it has a tiered PCB).

While it is powerful card, it relies on SLI technology. For this reason, I would set my sites on a 9800GTX instead (which will probably be a better bang to the buck anyways).

Currently, you can get highend or nearly highend performance for very cheap. So, I wouldn't be looking at these cards unless (a) you have money to blow away, (b) run a 30" monitor or (c) want to be able to play Crysis maxed out.

NVidia are just milking it atm. They were already leading the enthusiast market with the 8 series & this card should have been a 8900GX2 not 9 series. Same as the 9600 should have been 8700 or something.
The 9 series should have been saved for a new technology, not just a buff. My 8800GTS 640MB (which is 1year & 4months old) is still running pretty good anyway, I can wait for the 10 series to arrive.

Well, im still running on two 7900 GS's, so I think I'll probably go for the 9800 GTX in this case.

BTW with aforementioned setup I can run UT3 at 1280x1024, world detail 3, texture detail 5, and 8xs antialiasing with zero slowdown.

Yeah, my 8800GTX is kicking butt and taking names. I currently have no reason to even think about getting rid of it.

My next computer investment is probably going to be some more RAM and new HDs (one died and my current Seagate 7200.10 doesn't seem to be doing so well).

Ok well seems as i couldn't find anyone posting ANYTHING about this card here yet which im pretty shocked about i figured some of you should know about it. I did go thru the last 10 pages and found no one mentioning this card so.... sorry if you guys have actually talked about it jus couldn't find it.....
I'll post some links below for a couple of benchmarks i've found, i think you'll be glad to hear how UT3 performs according to gamespot lol.... and remember i think most of the benchmarks are putting the 9800gx2 against sli setups.... so results may not look stunning! but their putting 2 whole graphics cards against the 9800, so the 9800gx2 in sli mode will absolutely wipe the floor with everything out there, but at a heavy price tag....

Technically I was the first person to post about it. I am still unsure about it as different benchmark sites seem to show totally different testing results for the card. On GameSpot, it pwned when it came to UT3, but on another site, it came in second to an 8800. Also, all sites still show the same disappointing result: it can't handle Crysis on Very High and get playable framerates.

Too expensive. 2 9600's in sli gets around 85% performance of what the 9800gx2 does, at half the price.(probally uses less power as well). Nvidia says the card will be 600$, but realisticaly it will be 650$-750$ I bet. Hell for that much money someone could be running quad crossfire. If I was giving advice to someone right now, I would have to recommend the 9600gt sli setup. Its definitly the best price/performance right now.

Right now its really not worth getting a video card considering thre is going to be much newer cards comming out this year.

The 9800GX2 card is was just put out on the market so Nvidia could make some money until they release there new card called the GT200.

They said they could release it now if they wanted but there waiting for AMD to release the R7x.

So if your going to buy a video card wait until september to buy the GT200 or R7x.

Now, considering a single 8800GT will cruise through any game, tell me the point of buying a 9800GX2 that is $600? The thing is WAY overpriced for what it is and the only reason to buy one would be to say "I have a big e-*****". Its nothing new, just 2 cards in one. unimpressive.

OK not to sound mean or anything but when I come on here and see video card threads and people were mentioning the 9800x2 was going to destroy the 3870x2 I was like lets just wait til the product comes out and compare it to that card when the time comes. Well now its out and there are no drivers for it just like ATIs card (When they first came out) and its to heavy, noisy, overheating, and pricey. Don't get me wrong im not a fanboy of any company but people were saying that this card will kill the 3870 in everything and now people are saying that this card does not live up to its reputation now I find that funny. IMO don't judge a card until you seen the final product . Rant on

Any game? Did you know that the 9800GX2 benchmarks the higher on Crysis than any other GPU solution and STILL doesn't get playable framerates on Very High? 30fps is NOT considered cruising. Not that it's not an awesome high end card (better than my 7600GT lol), but Nvidia doesn't make high-end cards for no reason, there's a small niche where only the highest settings are acceptable.

What will the 9800GTX be? The 9800X2 is 2 x 8800GT 512MB, G92, at 600Mhz attached together. The single 8800GT are clocking higher now up to 700Mhz. Those in SLI would be $450 total, $150 cheaper than the GX2. You can never trust benchmarks as they are not real games. The 8800GTX is the 9800GTX if it's the G92 core. Just a confusion game by nvidia so people still buy the older 8800 series, non G92.

Try 8x AA at 1920 or even 1680 instead. You'll see the GX2 isn't so fast after all.
