    UT3 on the PlayStation3 Questions

So at this point I've pretty much ruled out getting UT3 on the PC. I love PC gaming, but my computer really couldn't play UT3 that well and I've heard that the community is quite small. How many more players/servers are there on the PS3?

I also want to know how much worse the PS3 version is in terms of gameplay. I haven't used a gamepad for a FPS...like, ever. So I'll be a tad behind there, but I imagine I can adjust. I've heard you can use a keyboard on the PS3 version too, which is a relief for me. But do most servers have it disabled? I'd rather not have to play against bots a lot. I'd also like to know which features/controls don't exist in the PS3 version. I know they cut crouching, but what else? Also, is Epic planning on releasing a patch for the PS3 version? I've heard its pretty buggy.

    Thanks!

There are always games to play in all the modes no matter what time of day or night. Well, except for mabey Duel, not many people duel on PS3. (I'm one of the many that don't)

The gameplay is pretty much identical to PC. The experience is the same, minus some resolution if you were on a high-end PC. And it runs at a smooth 30fps, though it drops on a few custom maps, most custom maps run smooth though.

You can use a kb/m if you want, but don't count out the sixaxis controller. People, before this game came out, really underestimated the 6axis, and didn't think it would be able to handle the fast hardcore action of UT judging by the PS2 controller compared to original Xbox. Well Sony proved everyone wrong. They obviously totally reworked the new controller, and I think it handles FPS games BETTER than the Xbox OR 360 controllers do. On UT3, and all other FPSs, the 6axis is tight, and always in total control. It really shines on UT3 though. No matter how intense the action gets, even with Speed Freak on, the 6axis always feels in control, and perfect. Sony really listened to the people last gen, and did a great job on the new controller, my hat's off to them on that. And crouch is the only control missing I believe.

Lastly, the game is not even as close to as buggy as many people exagerate it to be. In-game, there are absolutely ZERO bugs. The game is perfect. There are a couple bugs in the menus. There is a couple second random freeze up. It happens totally randomly, and freezes the menu for 2-3 seconds then unlocks. There is a worse freeze up bug that usually locks up the PS3 totally when you join certain servers. To minimize your risk of that happening before the patch, don't join midway servers, those are the ones that lock me up almost every time I join one (well more like half the time). Also the mics work, but they are push to talk, and this game is just too fast for push to talk, so it needs to be patched to be an open mic. Those are the only major bugs. Any other complaints like no split screen, and not being able to download mod maps from the server are just things people want, they aren't technical issues with the game.

Well, hope that helps a bit.

I have to disagree with some of the things Larry L said

      1. The PC community is bigger than the PS3 one (The reason people consider it quite small is because it only averages around 400+ players while UT2k4 gets 1200+)

      2. Evading is a little more difficult on the PS3 since movement speed is slowed down ~15% and there is no ability to crouch

      3. Mouse and Keyboard is a little gimped at this point (No ability to dodge, can't remap certain keys, laggy if not setup a certain way, no ability to dodge, and most personal servers don't allow M+K)

      4. A lot of mutators and some maps will not cook for PS3

      5. There are quite a few bugs:

Sometimes when using a lift the game will not animate the lift going up you'll just sort of teleport there after standing on it for a second or two (makes lifts really unreliable online)

Sometimes if you die and try to respawn to quickly you'll be stuck on the death screen unable to respawn for the rest of the map

Sometimes when you die the game puts you in this awkward spectator mode that you can't escape

If you switch weapons too quickly after respawning the enforcer stays infront of you floating in the air

Sometimes when you fire the rocket the projectile doesn't show up but it can still do damage

Those are just the bugs from the top of my head, there are more than this in the game.

If you plan on getting the PS3 version WAIT FOR THE PATCH or get the PC version, right now the PS3 version is not worth the money.

Edit: Nevermind, Tailsnake answered my other questions.

Why is it that people say the PS3 version is more popular when its really not? Also, you said Mouse and Keyboard is laggy if not setup a certain way. What do you mean by that?

          1. All the midway servers do, about 1/3 of the other servers also allow them
          2. Anywhere from about 100 - 300

Hmm, that just seems really odd. I hear all the time, "UT3 failed on the PC, but is doing great on the PS3". I could see them exaggerating the death of it on the PC - but why exaggerate the PS3 version?

At the moment I'm getting a PS3 for the Blu-ray, and no other game really strikes me as worth buying on the PS3. I already have a bunch of multiplayer games on the PC, like TF2, ETQW and COD4. I'd rather not buy COD4 again on the PS3.

Also, just to repost this in case you missed my edit: What did you mean that the keyboard is laggy under certain setups?

The sales on the PS3 were much better, it's just that less people play it online (most have moved on to other games)

As for PS3 Games, Check out Uncharted, Devil MAy Cry, Ratchet and Clank, Resistance, Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, and Burnout Paradise. If none of those pique your interest I'm personally looking forward to GTA IV, MGS4, Soul Calibur IV, Tekken 6, Street Fighter 4, Bionic Commando, Killzone 2, Resistance 2 and Final Fantasy XIII/vsXIII. There's a lot coming out for PS3.

None of those games out really interest me, except Resistance. I just don't like the fact that it was developed as a console exclusive title, and UT3 has PC roots. So does Call of Duty, which would probably be my 2nd choice.

Yeah, there are definetly games coming out in the future I want for PS3, mainly both FFXIIIs, MGS4, GT5 and maaaybe SC4. But none of those emphasize online play, and UT3 is very appealing to me. It's got amazing graphics, fast paced gameplay, option for keyboard and mouse, tons of maps, bot mode in case multiplayer ever dies out, etc. Speaking of bots, is the game still fun with them?

What is Resistance's multiplayer like and how popular is it?

I don't mind buying a buggy game either, as long as Epic takes the time to patch it and support it with new content. Doesn't seem like they are very good at it compared to other developers though, such as Valve and Splash Damage.

Edit: Another question, lol. With the keyboard enabled on the PS3 version of UT3, can you chat with it? I'm a kid and have a pretty high pitched voice, so I don't like getting flamed at when I use my mic.

Just to clarify something I said earlier that the original and 3rd posters seem to have mis-understood. I wasn't saying, or even insinuating that the PS3 UT community is bigger than the PC side of the fence. UT3 is really the first real UT game the PS loyal have had. In fact alot of the PS3 community seem to bash this game, probably just cuz of all the other people being so vocal about the few problem the game has. The OP just asked, specifically about how many people play online on the PS3 version, and I just said the PS3 version always has a good number of games up. I didn't say anything about the PC version, of which I would know nothing about, and I wasn't comparring the size of the communities at all.

As for you PS3 purchase....if you only want a PS3 for the Blu-Ray player, that's a bit of a waste, you can get a Blu-Ray blayer cheaper than $400 if you look around. I'm not saying don't get a PS3, I'm leading to the fact that there are alot of multi-player oriented games that are experiences you can only get on PS3 that make the PS3 worth every penny, and in fact make it the superior gaming platform (when it comes to consoles.

Obviously this game and CoD4 are great, but both are better on PC if you have a PC that can handle it. But CoD4 on PS3 is the best console version with more online players in a game, and better visuals that are in hi-def. And UT3 is a must have if you are a PS3 owner, there's no shooter as intense and fun on consoles. But there are some really great PS3 exclusive online experiences. Eye of Judgment. This game is SO much fun, and a gaming experience you'll find no where else besides mabey playing Magic live, but it's SO much better than Magic. Motorstorm is THE #1 most fun and intense racing game I have ever played in my life, and I'm a huge racing fan. No game causes me verbal outbursts besides Motorstorm, and it has great 12 player online. The PS3 version of GRAW2 is the ultimate version. It has more maps on the disc than 360 has with all it's expansion packs. They added like 15 gameplay modes, and mode you can think of is included. They added female soldiers, like 20 more weapons, and customizable soldiers for online. And they added an amazing 16 player co-op!!! Unheard of!!! And it's co-op is all brand new missions exclusive to the PS3. It's a 6 chapter, but open-ended co-op campaign. I played GRAW2 till I was sick of it on 360. When I got the PS3 version, it was like a whole new game, literally twice the content online of the 360 version.

Also obviously Warhawk is purely online. Warhawk is alot like Unreal in a way, but much bigger, more open battlefields, slower, and in 3rd person. There are a host of others as well currently out. And the online stuff coming out is even better. 2 free to play MMOs are right on the horizon. A shooting MMO called The Agency, and a MMO from the Everquest guys, called Free Realms. Also a Guild Wars will be out much later down the road. You know Killzone 2 is going to have incredible online. The original one was so awesome online, but was hindered by being to much game for the PS2 hardware, and cheaters online. Killzone 2 will be sick online, trust me. Obviously MGSOnline will be great for fans of that series. You can get into the Beta if you pre-order MGS4 btw. Resistance with 60 player online is going to be fun. There are alot more, but this post is getting huge for no good reason.

lol you must have never played instant action with bots then.

The VERY FIRST time i played UT3 the bots kept getting stuck in different places all the time, I only play offline so these things affect me in a big way, when i see my team getting stuck on some curve while the other team anihilates us ****** me off. Other times they get stuck in a loop and keep doing the same thing, like i had one kept repeating shooting his transocolator off but never transported, then there are others that start shooting at there own team or into nothingness.. one time i had one that couldnt make up his mind which weapon he wanted, he just stood there for 2mins changing from one gun to another, till a bot put him outta his misery. Theres also many graphic glitches in alot of maps and the physics plays up sometimes.. not to mention some of the models are small and their collision/hit box thing is totally whack.

So you see in actuall FACT there are In-game bugs and many of them!! UT3 is far from perfect, but dont get me wrong, i love ut3, its still the best game ever made imo, i just wish the bugs were fixed.

All right, thank you guys for clarifying my questions. I'm just sad that there isn't a large UT3 community on the PS3. With so many maps I'm worried I'll have to try most of them with bots since I hear that only a 1/4 or so are played.

I don't think Unreal has a community as such atm on the PS3 because there hasn't been a patch yet and the later they leave it the more chance this game is going to flop.
Also if there was a forum just for PS3 users *cough* to create clans on and organize tournaments things might hit off a bit as well,
look how well games like *shuts eyes* World of Warcraft have done community-wise just from having a place were everyone on a specific realm can chat on a forum of their own, guess it didn't cost Blizzard much to do either..*cough*
And yeh overall PS3 has so much potential it would be ridiculous not to buy one if your a gamer! Its already outsold the Playstation 2 in Japan, it has internet access and free internet gaming which plays effectively (On games which didn't just decide to rush out a money pig )
Unreal is playable and enjoyable online but annoying things like lifts not working properly, sometimes connection problems and lack of TLC for mouse and keyboard put a slight dampener on things and make it a little less like the good times I had on my PC with UT2k4 and UT99.
