So buying my 8800GTX back in time - was quite an investment And still it lives to be king with the Ultra...
nice
unfortunately, the same can't be said about my 8800 GTS 640 mb card.
at least i've had them nearly a year, even though its been essentially reduced to a 8800 GS in the model listings if you compare the performance.
the one thing i think the tweaktown review article should've done was include the 8600GT. because that is what this card is "replacing," isn't it? then you'd have a little less confusion on the readers part. its immediately easier to see in the graphs than to read in the paragraphs.
then, when you look at that, you'll see that the jump from 8600 to 9600 is WAY better than the jump from 6600/7600 to 8600.
If you read my post more carefully this card is great news for midrange shoppers. It's not meant to replace the 8800s that's what the 9800 series will be for. What is does do is slaughter the old midrange and nearly match 8800 performance which will be a pretty **** good deal once prices drop to around $150 or so.
My friend who runs a PC Component shop is getting some 9600GT's in tommorow and will be selling them for £117 ($228) for stock and £129 ($250) for OC versions.

Quite right!
The 8800GT 512MB was and still is a great card in part due to it respectable performance prowess and in part due to its relatively low MSRP starting at ~$250 for stock spec models. Part of the problem with the 8800GT 512MB card is that it was in such high demand that the price was artificially kept elevated. Another part of the problem with the 8800GT 512MB was there was little motivation for manufacturers to produce and sell the stock model because OC versions of the cards were no different and commanded a higher price (thus exacerbating the price and demand issues).
The 9600GT could be a great card too but it is ripe for price abuse and other such issues. As long as there is reasonable stock and the price stays around ~$150 / ~$160 USD things should be golden. As soon as they start elevating this midrange card beyond its midrange price range we have a problem.
Don't be expecting too much from the 9800's either when they come out. They may be the fastest thing's going when they do come out, but they are apparently going to be 2 downclocked 8800cores on 1 card. So it may be cheaper to get 2 8800GT's in SLI than one 9800GTX when they do arrive.
I guess nVidia could always change things though, the 9800's aren't due out for a couple of months yet.
Actually the 8800GT 512MB (stock clocked) MSRP was supposed to be lowered to ~$200 USD or so before the end of 2007. Now you can find 8800GT 512MB overclocked for less then ~$200,….with exotic dual slot coolers no less:
The 8800GS is not too bad for about ~150 USD but its supposedly locked from OC above 680MHz on the core,….not sure if that’s true but its what I hear. Presumably you have to modify the BIOS to go above 680MHz.
But if the 9600GT isn’t priced right for its niche target audience no one in their right mind would buy it,…not an informed buyer anyway. People and organizations that jack up the price on cards like this, especially economy cards, are basically taking advantage of the ignorant.
The original 9800 won't have 2 cores so stop trashing it if you don't know nothing about it. There will be two types of 9800 just like in the 7th series, one will be single core and one will be dual core(2 cores on 1 board) so it will be an graphics acc named 9800 GS,GT,GTX,Ultra or whatever and one 9800X2. About the 2 cores graphics board, alot of rumors about the 2 processors thing have been spreading and there is a chance it will be dual core as in 2 processors in one, not 2x processor, i do hope for the first one because it would mean a vast improvement in the graphics acc world and alot of performance, no more lagging or slow conductivity or any other problems that were on the cards that had 2 gpu's in one or two boards in one
Cool, I heard they were coming.
I have the 512 MB evga 8800 GTS right now.
Later on when the upper 9800s come out I may think of a switch.
I heard too that they will have two GPUs on a future 9800, thus being like SLI on one slot.
And you can run two of them too.
You have the best vid card around atm imo. I wish I would upgraded my cards before the 90 day period was up but I got lazy ...

There isn't an "original" 9800 on the books yet. Only the GX2, which will be 2x8800 on 1 card (or 2 8800s bolted together). I'm not trashing anything, if you look around most of the 9800 rumors which have been going round for months are all false.
