new Nvidia 9600GT slaughters the competition

Check it out. Nvidia's new mid range card is going to be available for purchase very soon. At some places it already is (but overpriced). This is the official successor to the 8600gt/gts and according to initial benchmarks it performs on par with the low end 8800s! So what's the big deal you say? Well when this card is widely available it should be only around $150, give or take a bit depending on the brand and exact model you chose like always. This card kills the 8600 line, the ATI hd3850, and even beats the hd3870 in certain benchmarks making all of those idiotic buys right now. This is great news for all gamers because with an affordable high performing card like this on the market a lot more people will be able to upgrade to play new games like UT3 better than they do now. Anyway this is an initial review I found but a lot more will be coming over the next few days. Thought I'd post it here because I'm sure not everyone reads the daily tech news like me.

PS mods this is where I want the thread. similar one in troubleshooting can be deleted.

Cool, I heard they were coming.
I have the 512 MB evga 8800 GTS right now.

Later on when the upper 9800s come out I may think of a switch.
I heard too that they will have two GPUs on a future 9800, thus being like SLI on one slot.
And you can run two of them too.

So a 8800 GT is still better? <3, but indeed the 9800 ones will be tempting once its needed actually

The card on the review is overclocked, against a stock speed hd3870. So who bought the 3870 already shouldn't worry, even more with a dual-slot cooling that allows nice oc So, it ends up being a matter of personal preference I guess

yah, they are doing the 2 gpu's on 1 card thing again - from memory it's 2 8800gt cores (which are based on the g92). I'm not a fan of it, they are always too hot/loud.

I have no idea why they named these latest 8800's as series 8 cards seeing they are all based on G92, the 9xxx tech... Its just added heaps of confusion in the line up, they could at least have called them 8900's or 8850's. Using names like 8800gts 512 makes no sense when it greatly outperforms the 320 and 640 versions - And the 8800gt out performing the 8800gts 320 & 640 again is just stupid naming.

Anyways, yah the 9600gt looks great. Im interested in how the 9800's will perform. I have my suspicions that the gap in mid and high end performance isnt going to be as large as it was in the 8xxx series tho, but i guess we will see soon enough.

I've not seen the card for sale anywhere near $150.

Most placed i've seen have them on pre-order for~£125-165... ($235-320)

£165 is complete madness, but I can see £120 being about the average price for this card, about 3850Pro price range and just below 8800GT.

And remember that the X600GT nvidia series are mid-end, so that means the 9600GT should be mid-end compared to the 9800GTX

The 9600GT has an updated core code of G94 not G92.

The title of the article is:

                NVIDIA GeForce 9600GT 512MB G94 Tested

                ***edit***

Also for what its worth, like the 8 series the new 9 series will likely inherit Ageia PhysX capabilities via CUDA due to the acquisition by nVidia of Ageia Technologies.

So thats an added little bonus!

At about ~$150 it doesn’t matter much IMO if it’s a little slower then an 8800GT. In many cases you cant touch an 8800GT 256MB card for ~$200 or an 8800GT 512MB for ~$250. An 8800GS is about ~$159 now but getting one at that price could prove difficult. The thing of it is in part how much the product is in demand and how well that demand is met.

If the 9600GT can be had at about ~$150 in quantity it will sell very well,….very well indeed.

                      SLI for ~$300 anyone?

The link that the very colorfully named “FYouFragU” posted should have technical specifications although I didn’t read the whole article. Try starting at the beginning of the article.

                          Look at the name though,…

                          9600GT,….

All nVidia X600GT cards have been mid-range as indicated by the nomenclature.

                          ***edit***

nVidia isn’t in a hurry to outperform the 8800GTX and 8800 Ultra with cheap cards just yet.

It'll be a tempting card for those on a budget.

As for the 9800s though, I see no purpose in getting one yet. My single 8800GT runs even Crysis smoothly with everything on high at 1650x1050, so I reckon it's best to wait a year until more demanding games are out then see what other options are available

Midrange GeForce 9 Cards Could Arrive on February 21

According to several graphics manufacturers, the first midrange cards from NVIDIA's GeForce 9 series will start finding themselves on market shelves on February 21st. Please take this with a grain of salt, as the old saying goes, because NVIDIA refused to comment on this, citing that they cannot comment on unreleased products. Keep in mind, also, that only a few makers will be pushing out GeForce 9 cards on the 21st. The early birds will price their cards around US$169-189 MSRP, pushing the cards they are replacing (8600GTS) down to US$139-149 MSRP. For those of you who would like an introduction to the 9600 series...

The 9600 GT adopts a 65nm process and is manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). The GPU sees an increase in processing units, 64, and memory bus width, 256-bit, over previous 8600 GTS cards, 32 and 128-bit. The GPU's performance should see an increase of over 40% compared to the 8600 GTS. The new GPU also introduces Dual-Streaming Decode technology which allows two high-definition image decoding processes to be performed at the same time and provides picture in picture (PIP) functionality.
