Now I just stick to pugs which luckily aren't ranked. :c
Nor will you ever reach #1 or close, even if you became the greatest player evar. Because you wouldn't be competing against the "top" ELO players (which UT3 incorrectly assigns to the wrong people). Which is kinda my point. I messaged dan and he said he went from like #9 to #22 just by logging into a DM server and getting killed like 3 times (by lower ELO players). Literally, 1 map, 3 deaths, BAM.

Stick to pugs tho, it'll make you a better player. Pub wunderkids tend to live in their own tiny little world of similarly unskilled players. I can't even tell you about all the bot accusations I got playing insta-gib. Ridiculous.

I used to actually look at my ranking adn elo rating but shortly after that saw the error in its ways. IF you judge how good u are based on this rating ur really not as good as think u are. With me playing Warfare, BTA, VCTF and occasional TDM trying to get an overall rating system is insane, respect from your peers is the only real way to be acknowledged.

All the talk about the patch and the titan pack has increased pug activity and I've played in 8 pugs in the last three days. So yeah, it's all about pug games for me, has been for the majority of my UT/2k3/2k4/UT3 competitive career.

But what you're saying is true, many pub players live in their own world, not realizing how amazing some people are at this game. Sometimes it's aggravating to kill these people then have them accuse me of cheating, but other times it's rather amusing but it gets tiring really fast. That's why I stick to pugs or if I'm pubbing, it's only with friends. The pugs may be getting active but we need the really good players back like Elix, boots, and xDBS. Right now players like me, janes, ihax, we've all hit a plateau since the absolute best players don't play anymore and we're all around the same skill level so nothing really comes out of the games anymore. We're used to each others playing style and often can predict where each other is going. But I guess that's what you get when you play the same people over and over again.

Bah I'm ranting. Gotta stop now.

Anyways, yes, the ranking system is broken and doesn't really reflect anything. If it went away I'd not miss it.

Ranking doesn't mean anything. The top players in the world who play in PUGs and on LAN are very low ranked and could beat enemy down top players 99999-0. Don't worry about your rank. The only thing ED is good for is checking your KD ratio.

The DM guys that are accused of botting on pubs, could just come and play other game types...

I know plenty of players who could wipe the floor with anyone on that list (except danimal). Even then, and dan will admit this, there are dozens of players at, around (or above? heh) his skill level that simply dont play at UMG (won't even touch warfare) and thus won't rank that high.

So in the current system, unless you're playing on UMG's warfare server, you're not going to rank very highly by and large. Broken. Wanna fix that in your patchez epic?
There isn't much to fix, except introducing a rank per different gametype instead of an unified one. Still, you say that some players could wipe the floor with others, but playing out of pubs often their stats aren't logged, therefore they officially don't exist.

...again, since they 'don't exist' but are several times more skilled than the 'high-ranked' players - the rankings are useless. Even with your method of splitting up gametypes they are useless. Take this example - currently I'm somewhere mid-hundreds, there are several players are top-50 (yes - DM players) the majority of which I can beat without dying.

It simply fails to rank a player based on skill. It's nearly impossible to have automated statistics without it being influenced by playtime/kills or other factors... true ranking will always be word (or text) of mouth.

Ranks can't say are you a spammer or you work hard to get your kills, are you a teamplayer or you don't cooperate, do you use an expensive gaming mouse or an ancient mouse you've got from your first computer, do you play at 20 FPS or 120FPS... that's something that ladders are never going to be able to tell.

plus you can see in the stats if he/she is playing DM/TDM or CTF/vCTF or WAR.
(I have a KpG = 35,9 in WAR. Think thats not that hard to achieve without spamming all the time)

Wow, I just got an email saying this thread was still alive.(sob...) I'm touched. I got mad at something said here months ago and gave it up. Anyway, right now i'm ranked about 350 or so, and i topped out at about 180 earlier this year, before too much overtime at work killed my energy and mental sharpness. Not anywhere near the skill level you guys are talkin about. I'm tired i suk. I'm not tired that day i'm closer to the top in the scoreboard. And sometimes somebody seemingly good comes online and just makes amazing shots, and i can't tell if they're hakkin or not. I'm just not up to the level of being able to tell. Did anyone mention the effect of ping on rank and skill? I usually play with about an 80 or so, but the other day I had a 21 ping and was just wasting folks a lot more than regular. But then i also see that some players with 150 to 200 ping just smash me ta bits so i remain in a state of partial confusion. But... still don't care too much, I'm playin for fun, and I have fun playin even tho I know i'll never be leet.
