I spent $2200 like 5 months ago. I can be made to do it again- at least until new games require it.

Yea it'll provide performance on 8 cores...

However it's optimized for 2. It's a lot more optimal to up the clockrate on a 2-core processor than it is to jump to 4 cores... it's all in how the engine balances it's splitting.

better to have more than 2 cores ... for some reason there ARE 4 cores available nowadays. Anyone knows why? =) Something must be more future like ^^

The 8 core benchmarks only 15% better than the single quad. The dual quad benchmarks no more than 70% faster than the dual core of lower freq. So, how does it show any real advantage? Sure the system runs on one quad, leaving the 2nd 100% devoted to run the game. This could also be done on a dual (2X) dual core setup.

The hardware is great, but until the software is optimized for it it does not do much good. Software optimization is geared to what is out there. Only very lately have there been any multiple threaded programs to take advantage of the dual core. It will be 5 years before the quad cores become the standard.

When I went from an e6400 to the Q6600, Medal of Honor: Airborne (a UE3 game) ran much, much better. Before I was getting around 60-70fps, but sometimes, less, then after, I usually got around 90fps or so, it's just great.

All those extra cores would be great for me. I could run a UT3 test server on one core, so it doesn't detract from the performance of the game itself, and still have cores left over to run the editor and watch TV at the same time.

Tell me something. Do you have to buy a newmother in order to have more than one core, or can you replace the one you have in your MB? For instance, I have a single core but I want to exchange it for at least a dual.

it's only 90 fps faster than mine, worth $4k to upgrade?

And here was me thinking 4 cores, 4GB of ram and 64bit OS to boot was mad. Still id love to see a quad cpu board, something about saying quad quad core has a nice ring to it

That depends on the processor you have now, or more specifically, on the motherboard and CPU socket. AMD has several dual-core processors that will work with the older socket 949 motherboards. Intel's Core 2 Duo CPU's use socket 775, which is the same as some Pentium 4 chips.

                              Crysis is GPU-limited.
