    Grass growing in Torlan

With the settings at 5/5 when I run through the grassy fields in Torlan, the grass comes into view very strangely and as a result looks like it's growing in front of me as I walk.

It just looks ridiculous... is this a draw distance setting that I have set wrong? Or is that just how it's supposed to look?

    what are your system specs...
if your video card isnt quite good enough, you may see weird things on very high detail settings. then again, it could be a problem that needs to be addressed in a patch.

...or it could just be LOD

i have noticed this too (on my GTX and E6600 @ 3.2 GHz btw)....I am assuming that this is what is supposed to happen...but don't ask me why.

Looks wierd sometimes, but also has a nice-ish effect.

yeah, i've got an 8800 GTS and a similar system.

          ...what's LOD?

LOD is level of detail, typically LOD occurs when your moving away from certain things in a map and they lose detail as you move away from them to increase performance. For the grass they loose detail as you get further away from the bits of it and gain detail as you stand closer to them.

              Level Of Detail

              [edit]

As meepzero says it is the level of detail of an object based on how far away you are from it.
The engine will put in more detail on an object the closer you get to it. (it helps keep up the frames per second as the pc does not need to draw evey last bolt on a scorpion halfway across the map from your viewpoint)

These are tricks for fps optimization, like the way vehicle detail kicks in slower than in 2k4. People complain about the characters not loooking like they did in the pre -release screenshots(true btw) as well ,but with these left in ,even oc'ed qx9650/ultra sli machine's frame rates would become iffy at high res at moments of high screen action when hw demands peak.
So for your average setup the choice would be either graphically poor ,disappointing low settings or high, graphically good but frame rate sapping at default(Crysis). Personally I think they could of sacrificed a bit of the weapon detail for better, solid character detail maybe.

"Crysis problem" You just made that up yourself.

Edit: I had left the thread open idle for too long and did not see the edits moloko applied, so the quote is an updated version of what he said, but before the update he clearly mentioned the problem as "the Crysis problem"

Not really, it's fairly well known that it takes an absolute monster to run Crysis well at anything but low settings...

You can't define that as "the Crysis problem" Simply because Crysis isn't poorly optimized but it's just one hell of an advanced game, that other games are slacking is one thing but that doesn't mean that it can be considered a problem.

If you don't have a rig to handle Crysis on high, then you're waaaay behind on hardware, hardware evolves you know, and quite fast too especially with the introduction of DX10.

You can run crysis on high with fairly cheap hardware too But if you have lets say a 7600gs, you shouldn't be looking weirdly that you can't handle crysis on anything but low, or if you are still in the pentium/athlon era.

No, it's a fallacy that it takes a supercomputer to run Crysis.

I ran it just fine with my X2 6000+ and a 7800GTX at one setting below highest on everything, with shaders on medium. Ran at around 30 fps.

I've noticed this too, and it gives me a laugh because it really does look as if the grass is sprouting out of the hill as you walk by. It's a LOD thing, I'm sure. I do think they could have chosen a better approach though.

Kaluro, the Crysis problem is the lack of compromise in that game ie. it's not using the kind of optimization tricks Epic has used here, to get the game to perform better Framerate wise but still look good on weaker machines , Crysis doesn't compromise -looks fantastic but is a known HW murderer on high res at high detail.

Deathmoon: Why do you think there is no breakable environment in MP Crysis? 30 fps what was your minimum, I guess that was your highest, right?

I just had a look, I didn't really notice till you guys pointed it out (dunno if thats good or bad, I used to just whizz off on me board, now i'm running along watching the grass grow lol), it reminds me of Thief 3, when you shoot moss arrows at the ground
