How do the rankings work? (PS3)

I can understand slight fluctuation day to day, but looking at my stats and then looking at people ahead of me baffles my mind. I have just under 25,000 kills, yet they dropped me from rank 9 overall to 71?? Is it because of my number of deaths (which is below 9,000)? I don't understand why that would matter, but then again, my whole question is how do the rankings work to begin with. It seems as though almost every time I'm done playing a session where I completely beast everyone else, where my kills more than double my deaths in every match, my ranking actually drops lower than where I started and this is definitely the lowest I have been at #71. I've never even been lower than 21 before (I usually hover between 7 and 15), so to drop so drastically after playing so well really annoys me. Anyway, my PSN ID is Kwietstorm, for anyone who cares to add me.

On a side note, does everyone else have to have the user-generated map installed on their PS3 in order for them to be included in a deathmatch? The mutators automatically get downloaded, but many times I've hosted a deathmatch on a custom map, everyone will get booted before the match starts. It almost kills the whole purpose of having the maps. Also, does Epic have any plans of releasing their own new set of maps over the PSN?

The ranking system works just as easily as the search function.

Tis obvious enough, you were trashing noobs so you don't go up much (if anything at all) for killing them, but do go down the times they kill you. That's why stats don't matter that much, I could jus play dm's with noobs and get a 10/1 ratio easy, wont give me a high leaderboard position.

Never actually seen you in the top 10 on the PS3 leaderboards tho.

Take it from a PC veteran and long time stat tracker: the ranking system is whack. It has never really made sense, nobody actually really understands it, nor has it ever been in any way an accurate reflection of skill. There are so many important variables to consider in any given match that are never ever taken into consideration by the stat system that it makes the whole thing a joke. Ping and latency are just a couple of examples. They have a direct effect on how well you are able to play. And put this scenario into the mix: you're ranked #1 and you live in Europe. The #2 ranked player lives in California, U.S.A. Who's really better? You'll prolly never know because you will never play each other (unless you really think you can play well with a 300 ping). There are some really good players whose ranks will never reflect it because they do not live in a high population area; therefore the amount of decent players who will play on servers which they ping well on is minimal. When you take it all in to concideration it means that the ranking system is nonsense.
