From my post on another board...
I mainly play CTF and VCTF so that's what my strategies pertain to
Manta - The easiest way to get a road kill with a manta is to pancake the enemy (x to jump in the air, alt-fire to slam down)
- You almost alway have to use alt-fire to ensure road kills
Raptor - Alt-fire Missles lock onto other raptors, furies and mantas
- You can use the roof of the opponents base as a hiding spot and a place to heal in suspense
Viper - hold x until an icon pops up on the bottom of the screen then press alt-fire to launch the viper as a bomb (great for killing darkwalkers)
Darkwalker - alt-fire knocks away close enemies, use it when an enemy is trying to circle strafe around you at close range
- you can crush enemies by holding O (decent way to kill after knocking them down with alt-fire)
Hellbender - air mines (primary fire) do much more damage when detonated (Alt-fire)
Scorpion - jump botton gives you a speed boost
- leave the vehicle when speed boosting to use the scopion as a bomb (great for killing tanks or just throwing enemies off your tail)
- primary fire lock onto flying enemies (including manta)
Nightshade - alt-fire let's you toggle invisibility
- run enemies over rather than using primary fire (using primary fire takes forever to kill and gives away your position)
- primary fire heals allied vehicles
- deployables rock (drop spider mines in enemy territory or use to protect flags/nodes, slow field has a ton of defensive uses, place EMP at choke points to knock enemies out of vehicles, place EMP under a darkwalker to disable it for a while then kill the pilots that were ejected, use portable shield to protect nodes)
That's all that comes to mind as far as vehicles, now some map strategies I use
Coret - get a rocket launcher and hide in the entrance to where the enemy rocket launcher spawn, if done correctly on a larger game you'll get a ton of kills
Demois - much like coret, get a flack cannon and stay near the teleporter leading to the turret, primary fire when you here the teleportation sound (sound plays a little before the enemy gets there giving you a huge advantage)
Necropolis - get a nightshade into the enemy base and plant spider mines (I've gotten Godlike twice like this)
Suspense - the easiest on foot route to getting the flag is using a scorpion or manta to get to the enemy base, get the flag, leave from the rear exit, go behind thier base and grab the big keg of health, jump down (make sure you get off your board), and run on the land mass rather than swimming, there'll still be a small portion of water you need to cross, but after that you're home free.
- use the suspension cables on the bridge to get to the highest vantage point (great sniping position)
- Use the raptor to camp at the enemy base and kill mantas, raptors and tanks
Kargo - get the slow field genertaor and put it on your flag
Sandstorm - place spidermine trap near enemy flag
- use junp boots to get over the huge stairs
- if you plan on flag running get jump boots and armour/big keg o health before going
- redeemer can be reached by going on top of the huge wall and dropping down what looks like a sewer drain

Well the best way to improve general skills is to just play the game, basic UT skills just consist of common sense, accurate aiming, memorizing maps, learning to dodge and use cover, and choosing the right weapon for the situation.
BTW Thanks for complaining about my post without adding any constructive advice for him yourself... I'm not trying to be offensive, but as somebody who seems to have decent experience with UT you should be able to give him an idea of what he should do to get better.

Never use a portable shield to protect a node.
I'll come along and drop my own spider mine nest in it's middle. Then you have a big, big problem re-taking that node.
You have to get in the shield to attack, but the spiders in the shield will kill you, and you can't attack from a distance because it's your own shield.

When coming face to face with an enemy, don't forget to dodge (tap a movement key 2 times)
And I'm sure allot of people will not agree with me when I say "practice against bots", but it surely does help (with me, that is)
When I had UT2004 and no internet connection, I practiced and practiced for months against does darn bots..
But look at me now.. I OWN xDDD well.. most of the time ^^
And yeah, don't play counter strike, it messes up you movement. & it sux xD

Here are some good general tips
-Never stop moving
-Learn to dodge frequently
-Master the wall dodge (you can dodge in the opposite direction off a wall, even after a double jump. You can use this to make long jumps.
-Learn where all the powerups are on all maps. This means shield belt/udamage/berserk/invis/redeemer. Learn how long they take to respawn.
-Memorize the layout of the map you're playing on. Simply doing this will make you loads better at DM.
-Master the art of the shock combo
-Learn to lead your targets
-Play often!! Practice, practice, practice!

A lot of improvement seems to just come from playing, but there are a few things you need to focus on to get better at them.
I don't play any vehicle modes so I don't have much advice for that, but here are a few tips.
Focus on movement more than aim. People who focus on aim tend to stand still and get owned. Your aim will improve anyways.
Try to do prediction shots. They take some foresight and you wont get better at them unless you actually think about where people are and where they are going. You have to think ahead to where to place the shock combo or rocket salvo before your opponent is actually there so they run into it as they exit a corridor or pass an opening... as opposed to just reacting visually to your opponent and shooting at them.
Try to switch to the most effective weapon for the job. Some times you get mentally locked in to whatever weapon you are using and are not as effective as you could be. Example: If someone eats one of your rockets to the face at med range (and you suspect they are low on HP because they just had some vials an no armor) switch to a finishing weapon like the stinger or link gun instead of giving them the chance to dodge your rockets and escape or kill you.
Try to time the power ups. If you don't get them, someone else will. The less people on the map, the more important they are (and the greater the opportunity for you to control them is). When playing with a low number of players, power ups can drastically effect the momentum of the game. The guy running around with 100+ armor and 100+ health for the majority of the match is most likely going to win.

Why do people call spidermines in the enemy base an exploit? It's exactly how the **** things were designed.
Never done it myself (mostly cos I couldn't be ***** driving the nightshade across a map), but had it done to me multiple times and sure as hell it's annoying, but it's a valid tactic.
If you wanna kick from a private server because someone is dropping spidermines, sure, you're call. But don't join a public server and ***** and moan about it like some little princess, cos it's using the weapon exactly how it was meant to be used.
And 'most' of his so-called map strategies were... er... map strategies? Please explain the exploits you call him out on.

Other then practicing moving combo's I suggest spectating good players, good online players! When you spectate someone better then you try to watch their weapons selection and watch how they move. Otherwise do this:
HorizonX said it best:::

Want to be a better player? Use whatever tactic you feel will help your team most at the time. Don't listen to people who say "don't do this because it's noob." Just remember in CTF and Warfare the goal is not kills, it's winning the match via objectives. Heal team mates vehicles. You don't have to get all the glory for your team to win. Sometimes a supporting role is the most effective thing you can do. Give the orb/flag carrier a ride. Defending the final power core is almost never useful, although sometimes defense of a prime node is good strategy. Your enemy can't respawn at a node if it's under attack, so be sure to attack nodes just for a sec either before killing someone, or be all over it after they die. Don't spawn kill your enemies at a locked node/base. They will just respawn and eventually kill you. You may get kills, but it won't help your team.
Finally, just keep playing! You'll improve over time. Just expect to die a lot in the mean time.
