Anyone know what this card would need for a power supply?

please do NOT buy a 8600, it's a bad bang for buck card. You'll be way more satisfied with an ATi X1950Pro or XT.

id say, spend a bit more, buy a 3850 its performance isnt as good as a 3870 or 8800, but it will let you play alot of games at medium/high settings on 1600x1200 resolutions.

400w+ power supply. the 3870 needs about 450w power supply, so im guessing 400w would be sufficient in most cases.

This leads me to beleive that the graphics card that I have is not powerful enough.

I went onto the NVidia website and did the 'Help Me Choose' thing for the GeForce Cards (I was told these were a good brand). The only one recommended for 'Play the latest PC Games' and under £50/$100, was the 'GeForce 8500 GT'. Great. But on my searchings through this forum, many people have said that this card isn't actually that good and wont run UT3 as well as can be acheived.
This makes no sense to me

            So what do I do?
Before you buy anything you are gonna need to know what is your power supply watts that are currently installed on your comp. then, do you have an extra power connecter to power a card that requires additional power like the 8800's. Plus the 8800's are a larger/longer card and may not fit in your case so beware! (and the 8800GT's only take up 1 pci slot ).

I would go to Dells website and plug in your comp model and see what they reccommend for upgrades for you system.

You are getting lots of good advise here. As far as nVidia line of GPU's nothing less than a 8 series I would go with IMO.

So my suggestion would be get that 8600 card and buy another gig of ram.

            Good Luck!

i see alot of people going on about Wattage, but thats not the main factor to be perfectly honest.

its about AMPS on your 12 V Rail. some PSU's have two 12V Rails.. cheap PSU's can offer high wattage, such as 750W but that AMPS it puts out are very low

as above someone mentioned a X1950 pro which is a great card, but it does recommend 30AMPS on the 12 V ..... make sure you check this out before you buy

It's OK, I went to NVidia's Website, and they say the minimum power supply needed is 350W for the 8600GTS.

                      Slight problem.

I have checked my power supply and it says:
                      305W
                      5V
                      22A

I am guessing that this will not support the video card, therefore I am a bit stuffed. How easy are these things to replace? And will it scupper my Motherboard by pumping more power through it?

If your still under warranty with Dell....Go to Dell's website and plug in your "Express Service Tag" or "Service Tag".
They will provide you with ALL the options for upgrading your computer. Of course you don't have to buy from them but you will get the info your looking for.
Even if you don't have a current warranty with them you can still find out what you need.

Grosie If this helps at all....I just checked out the XFX 8600GT XXX edition graphics card and it does not require any additional power to run the card.....as long as you have a PCI or PCIe slot on your dell your good to go!

Reviews on that card were great!

I had the 6800 when the Demo came out and it was ok, playable at the default res of 800x600. Didn't stop me from enjoying the game one bit.

So if you can afford the 8600GT check into getting another 1 Gig of RAM to go with it. The game does take a lot of memory to run the game and the more the better.

                          Hope that helps you!
