    8800GT 256MB better buy for UT3?

I can't speak for the reliability of Expreview.com (I've never seen them before), but they have some interesting test data for UT3 and Bioshock comparing
    • 8800 GT 256MB
    • 8800GT 512MB
    • 8600GTS 256MB
    • 3870 512MB
    • 3850 256MB

The 8800GT 256MB is holding its own with both games at resolutions of 1280 and 1600 with very little fps difference between it and the big brother 8800GT. With the price difference, makes a good case for the 8800GT 256MB being the better buy for UT3 unless someone has a very high resolution monitor.

    It's big brother 88800GT? Huh?

The only difference between the two 8800GT's is the RAM. One has 512, one has 256.

And the 512 will perform better. Not HUGELY better but a bit better.

Im sure he means the GTX, and if so, its true. The GT is very close to the GTX, at half the price.

        im running:

        q6600 quadcore (not oc'd)
        8800GT 512MB
        2g corsair xms

on max graphics, I get around 90 - 250 fps.
I play on 8x6 with all settings at 1 though.

on minimum graphics, i get anywhere from 150 - 300 fps, even 24 man all out war servers. In TDM / DM its about the same, but outside the map in spec mode, I can hit 700 fps.

Best bang for the buck today is the 8800GT.

I would get the 512 model, it isn't that much more expensive.

                get a ati radeon 3870 much better than 8800 gt 512 mb/256.

                plus 10.1 support

                others only dx10.0

3870 especially with updated drivers right now 8800 gt wins in some games over it because 7 month driver maturity lead for architecture.

ati has alot of optimization for games to be doing for r600 architecture and bug fixes, and fix aa performance hits.

It's amazing how 3 8's look like 2 when you've been staring at the monitor too long. LOL

Thanks. I corrected it so no n00b's get confused.

3870 is more powerful than even 8800 ultra.

ati x2900 ftw, cheaper than the 8800gt

                            Not in benchmarks, sorry.

unoptimized games drivers and aa bugs are hampering 3870/2900xt performance.

nvidia has 7 month lead in driver maturity for g80 architecture.

3870 will eventually outperform the 8800 ultra with newer drivers.

3870 has higher pixel shader/second performance over 8800 ultra.

but the 8800 ultra has higher pixel fill rate/texture fill rate.

shader is more important nowdays, just buggy drivers holding ati stuff back.
