As someone that never really played UT2003/2004 but played a lot of UT99, are all Invasion maps simply rounds of killing monsters or are there some linear maps with quasi-objectives like the UT99 mod Monster Hunt?

I'm pretty sure that it's rounds of progressively harder monsters. Some servers have an Invasion-RPG mod where your character levels up and becomes stronger (higher damage bonus, higher max ammo, etc.). On the Death Warrant Monster Mash server, which is the one I play on, on the last level everyone tries to kill a godlike Satan monster--Lucifer. If all of the Lucifers are killed before time runs out, everyone on the server gets 1500 xp points (last time I played). On that server you choose from one of three character classes to play, each of which as advantages and disadvantages.

The Invasion RPG mod is fun, especially if you're in a voice chat server with your friends. Here's a link to the discussion forum for the server I play at which contains more information.

Invasion is multiplayer maps with monsters semi-randomly spawning in. Spawning is designated by waves.

I have been promoting the idea of bringing Monster Hunt-like features to Invasion for UT3. It's a great idea. Monster Hunt was everything Invasion is, and more.
