How can I put textures on this? (editor)

First screenshot. I have a box here. How can I put textures on it as walls?

I was following this tutorial (2nd link) and it says to click a texture button. Looking on my unreal editor, the button is unmistakably absent.

The tutorial is Unreal Editor 3 and I am using Unreal Editor 3. Is my version broken or something? Default textures for made cubes are also missing.

You can't put a texture on "it" because "it" is the builder brush. The builder brush is basically a tool that you can manipulate in the editor before you affect the game world. Such as, for example, if you want a room of a certain height, you can adjust the builder brush to have the appropriate properties before you commit to creating that space within the editor.

Use Ctrl+S or Ctrl+A to subtract and add BSP geometry, respectively. This will "commit" the builder brush in its current location and dimensions as a BSP brush.

Also, the tutorial you are looking at is for the UT2004 editor. The UT3 version of UnrealEd is somewhat different.

First off, you're just looking at the builder brush (sort of a template), you haven't created anything that could be textured yet

Go to "Generic Browser" (the gridish icon close to the middle of the toolbar), the "File" => "Load"
Pick one of the packages and check "Materials" on the left list.

      Chosse a material.

      Close browser.

Click on "CSG: Subtract" or "CSG: Add" - depending if you're in a subtractive or additive environment.

Ok, I get that part now. I am using subtractive and I subtracted a rectangular prism. How do I get textures on that? (I've tried additive, too)

Wait nevermind. I started it over, again, and now it is working

          EDIT: Nm to the nm.
I cant select inside of the box.
also, only a few of the materials get anything but black and none of the textures work.

          All I get is black.

Add a light or switch to "Unlit" in perspective

You need to do what heelcat said, and you can not apply textures to a wall in UE3, you must put the texture into a material, then apply the material to a wall. There are lots of pre-made materials you can use, they have sphere icons with green borders, but you need to show them in the checkbox list to the left of your screen.

ok thanks guys. I've been messing around with this UT3 editor tool for the past couple hours and I think I'm understanding it.

Hourences tools helped a LOT, but at times he is a bit confusing.

btw: If I make a map, will I be able to host a listen server and have people join and autodownload it? TIA

You should get Ut3 CE because that tutorial disk is pretty good.
