LinuxHardware spotted Icculus in an IRC channel and was able to check on the status of the Unreal Tournament 3 Linux client and server. It seems the server is being held up while removing a few references to some un-named middleware, but should be available "soon". The client is going to take somewhat longer.
The question of a Gears Linux client also came up, to which he replied that a Mac OSX port was in the works, but Linux... not so likely:
< icculus > augustus: There's something about a Linux port that the Gears publisher doesn't like...can't quite put my finger on it...
un-named middleware??? That sounds like PR cover up all the way.
Oh man, I just read that interview today.... I wonder if the middleware is Gamespy gunk? I really hope Epic doesn't skip over a linux release, or they're going to lose more than one dedicated customer.
When I first read it when I seen the link to the article on the mailing list, I thought GameSpy as well. Cant see it being PhysX because rumor has it that PhysX cards will be getting a Linux driver due to demand, which would be quite a valuable resource to dedicated server hosters. Don't know what other middleware **** is in there besides Bink.
