    Gamespy Review 4/5

To be honest since it was gamespy an all, I was expecting a weak, extremely biased review. However to pick up on the negatives:

UT3's got a lot of game, and most of it's pretty kickass. And yet, over the course of a few days of playing UT3, one question kept nagging us: why did this game take three-and-a-half years to make? UT3 feels strangely skimpy and unpolished in comparison.
It's still one of the best games in town, but after such a long wait, it's a little disappointing to find it's in many ways a step back from a game we've been playing for years.
I was really suprised at how well they put it.

As much as I like the game, I did wonder why it took so long to make, I did feel it was unpolish, and I did feel that in some senses, it was a step back.

The engine is nothing without being applied properly

That is extreemly well put by gamepsy, i expected a hype review but it isnt and they slammed the nail on the hammer. The answer to why it took them so long and why allot of stuff is missing (less content) is also very simple to me.

Gow is reason 1 and reason 2 is trying to make 1 game for 3 platforms at the same time, it just doesnt work. The most stunning thing thats been bothering me since we knew the game wasnt what it was supposed to be, is the qestion did they forget all this stuff or did they basicly refuse to add it, because its a part of there new ideal created by the headman "Mark Rein" ?

We never had a clear answer on this even tho the company isnt forced to answer this so cant they stop us from asking this.

they did get some nice points taken out but i wouldent give it a 8/10 but more likely something like 9.2/10.

still its the gameplay that determines the game and the gameplay in UT3 is brilliant, i really do think that if Epic would launch it like 1-2 months later and fix the freaking server browser + adding more options and ofcourse fixing the major bugs it could turn out as a real contender for the game of the year title which is not really important for me but should be important for epic as those kind of titles and good reviews makes people buy the game and makes our community larger.

I'm dissappointed by the reviews only in this manner.

Redesign, change of plans, features abandoned or didn't make for release, etc...
They must have a lot of game concepts, code and content on their machines

I think they pretty much summed up my opinion on it. Great gameplay, graphics, etc, but it took forever to come out, and the campaign is kinda stupid.

I just need to learn how to code.

                But overall, I love it.

UT is not a singleplayer game. It's stupid that they even put in a singleplayer campaign. They should have used the time it took to do that to polish the game and make it more competition friendly, or add a couple of extra maps.

The singleplayer campaign is terrible. Completely, utterly worthless. I preferred UT2k4s... at least it didn't make me feel like I was playing a corny-as-hell console game.

Any minute they spent making it was a waste of time.

Because they outsourced the internet components to gamespy.

Three-and-a-half years to make? Jeez...I guess that that writer was the only one complaining when Epic released patches and a bonus pack for UT2004.

                        QFT

If they had put all the time they took into programing the single player campaign into fixing all the bugs and polishing maps and game play we would be in a better state, what's done is done I hope they start patching things pretty quickly, I don't think they would want to release the game on PS3 with a broken demorec.

I thought this was a well-written, well-researched review. One thing really stood out though:

it's in many ways a step back from a game we've been playing for years.
That's a big assertion and the reviewer doesn't seem to back it up in the actual review. Sure, the singe player campaign is idiotic and contrived, but wasn't it always?

Is that a "hard to understand" one ?

There is allot less then we had in UT2k4 and no im not only talking about the options. Also i do understand that UT2k4 had all the stuff from 2k3 and thats why it was so contentfull.

Overall UT3 is at this moment a step back from where they did before, i did say "at this moment" the future will tell.

It ends on an optimistic note; sadly it's a call for UT4 asap
