I don't see why industrial, run-down or war-torn has to imply drab gray. Just look at Industrial Decay to see how much color can do for such settings.

What's missing? Either you like it or you don't. If you don't care you can vote pie. I even bothered adding the "visibility" option.

I couldn't agree more. It looks like they indended to add some effects that were supposed to make the game look more realistic while actually achieving quite the opposite. Wake up, games industry: Real life is not brown, grey and bright white!
The latter is especially irritating, I think. What's the use of having a nice skybox with blue sky and clouds if the post-processing turns it into a unicolored bright something anyway? Just look at this Torlan screenshot, it looks like there's a nuclear-explosion-flash in the sky that has been frozen in time. That doesn't look real, not even unreal, but just wrong. The only white stuff in in the sky should be the clouds, not the whole thing.
A famous VGCats comic that explains exactly how I feel about UT3's looks can be found here: http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=224

And I agree that the distance-blur is the most annoying thing of all. Motion blur is ok, as it simulates the human eye. But distance-blur on the other hand is nothing but disturbing to the eyes. Normally, when looking at a certain spot, up close or in the distance, the human eye adapts to it and sharpens the focused spot. Forced blur prevents that, when I try to look in the distance and my view does not sharpen up it simply makes me feel like I forgot to put my glasses on, gives me a headache. Selective blur is good (like Crysis' ironsights, the foreground gets blurry while the spot where you aim is sharp), but a uniformly applied blur is just disturbing. For me, it's better to disable it, as it just doesn't look right because the eyes can't adapt to that.

Another downside of the blur is the underwater view. Since this blurry mess is a default, remakes of famous UT underwater maps like AS-OceanFloor are now virtually impossible, unless the mapper includes a mutator script in the map that somehow disables the underwater blurriness.

There are many colors in the game ... you just need to adjust it.
Epic made the game look realistic. If you look outside your window, what will you see? Grey or total colors when the sky is grey? =)

I play ut3 with totally high brightness ... like with the old UT99 opengl.dll. ITs ugly but useful =)

With a bit more contrast and blue, to match a bit better the original DOF+bloom screens. Could be even better, it's just that I'm not very good at this

On previous post with DoF, the sky looks more "artistic", reminds me of some sort of hand made painting. And w/o bloom, pickups, ammo, health vials lose that pleasant glow. OTOH, I get 20 to 30% higher fps, more visibility and less red when I get hit. I couldn't care less if DoF is less competitive per se, but it and and sky very bright due to bloom, leads to eye strain that it something that I really would like to stay away from.

Ut99 is grey and brown, so UT3 should be grey and brown. This Ut200x cartoon stylenever fit into unreal, and was a point to create bright skins...

With grey and brown, players are visible like in UT99. Its fine, its unreal.

The happy bright cartoon edits burn my eyes, if you think that's realistic you either have a poorly calibrated screen or watch cartoons too much.

However, I do agree that bloom is overdone, it may be realistic if you're trying to simulate a really cheap camera, but human eyes do not percept reality like that

It's not so much the 'hardcore' greys and browns I have a problem with (I think they actually help distinguish ut3 from it's predecessors) but it's in the lighting and the bloom etc that makes things look too dark or too light... some of the maps look almost perfect but others looks pretty ugly due to that dirty look. Though I do think the floor texture used on Deck is too busy and a lot of the maps do suffer from looking the same everywhere so it's harder to place yourself in the environment by using texture changes, even the floors and walls are the same hue in some shots. However I think those are the exceptions rather than the rule because I have no problem with Demo Shangri-la and there are a few maps with that kind of lighting/colour from what I can see.

Yessss, it feels exactly like that. UT has never been dark and gloomy before thats why I don't understand their Art direction this time around.

The Unreal series is well known for being brightly coloured. Indeed, some accused Unreal of having "Disco lighting". UT was pretty colourful too.

Some of those edited screenshots above are way overdone, but the default ones are much too drab compared to previous games and real life.

Each monitor has it's own adjustments, I have it brighter and with low contrast which washes out the colors even more, because it's more confortable for reading text at any hour of the day or night. Don't take the thread to a wrong direction, just because I posted according to my monitor, that's completely pointless.

Edit: btw, from the screenshots I posted, which ones are the worst, bad, acceptable, etc... ?

It is in fact possible to have a miscalibrated monitor.

I like the ones without DoF best, the ones with normal post-processing come second.
