unfortunately, since ut3 is pretty much an array of random servers, epic would have to implement some kind of authentication system. Does it already exists in the current login?
Yes, that way epic doesn't have to worry abt backward compatibility and just focus on the latest and greatest optimized build

And servers will have to update too, else they wont have players in them. Unpatched servers r just bot nests

I think that was more of a crappy bug than a feature.

Yes, steam is a good example, it was very bad at the beginning, but its shaping up to be something great now.

I find in game patchers dont work as well, R6 Vegas had a lot of problems and there were alot of ppl saying not to do it through there patcher. Also its much slower to download the patches compared to downloading and installing the patch from an external website.

Also most of all it will slow down the speed in which you can get in the game as it will always check if there has been a patch...i always liked UT2k4 cos like if i had literally 5mins spare i cud get in the game and have a game so quickly, instead of waiting for this that and the other to load.
Steam doesn't have these issues you are talking about.

Right now, the auto update should begin when launching, if not when installing the game. It should scream "Update available"

This is the first thing that UT3 should do. Update with the 0-day patch !

I think that 'other company' that did Doom 3 had it right where it lets you know one is available but doesn't require you to install it.

New patches sometimes like to break some things while fixing others and I'm not just talking about mods. See UT2004 3369 for some people. I personally never had any issues with it though.

Either way it should at least notify you that a patch is available.

Auto update should be turned on by default, with an option to turn it off somewhere in the menu, for advance users.

If you analyze the sales records, there are 100000's of gamers who bought ut2k3 and ut2k4 but never end up playing online, probably because..

    1. They tried but cant enter any servers (outdated version installed) all the servers have moved on to the latest and greatest version. Remember, this game will still be available off the shelves worldwide even 2 years from now. So average joe gamer is gonna walk home with ut3 sometime in 2009, tries to play online, but cant, and he doesn't realize that he must patch it first, or where/how to get the patch.

    2. They don't have all the bonus packs installed, which is a prerequisite to enter many servers nowadays.

    3. They get their asses kicked too easily, nothing we can do about that, but leave them alone in a ffa frenzy.

So please, think of the newbies. Put yourself in their shoes for a sec.

I'd like to see auto-updates as an option. Also bonus packs should download automatically if auto-update enabled.

I like choosing when to update myself. I don't even let Xubuntu auto-update.

It's nice for an option, though. But if I don't want auto-updates, I also don't want a reminder telling me to update. Or, if anything, a one-time only reminder that WON'T repeat itself every time I start the game.
