    Rankings

Epic, why in the blazes did you utilize an ELO ranking system for UT3? ELO is only useful for 1v1 matchups, not TDM/FFA/CTF/WAR or whatever.

This is gonna be another one of those ignored threads where Epic won't reply to and someone will just hope that they read it.

i have to admit mate, you have a point.

it would be better if the rank was based off kills/deaths/flags/orbs/nodes, etc.

now due to ELO i find myself being around 200 000 one day, and the next be around 100 000 then after that falling back up to 150 000. its REALLY unstable

Does the rating take into account bot kills in online games?

If so, that'd be pretty cheap. People could just set up a server in which they slaughter novice bots to up their rank.

I'm a little confused about this whole ELO ranking system. I've read up on it, but I've only seen applications to two player games, like chess.

          I know what you mean.

I was devastating people on public servers for a while and got up to 16th on the ELO rankings.

Then I started dueling and playing against people who know what they're doing and it plummeted back to 150th or so.

I felt deflated and then I realized that I'd allowed myself to care too much about my stats. I should just be happy that I'm holding my own against players like Stryfe and Infinite! Let's hope I can keep that up

If I had the option to turn them off then I could just play the game and not worry about it so much... ;P

PS: for those that don't know, be thankful that eVeNfLoW is chained to Australia by his ping, otherwise he'd murder us all ;-o

Stats are really only useful to a certain point. What matters is, like nthexwn shows, is that when you go against players of like or above skill that you do well.

There are a lot of stat threads floating around. I still refer to my old idea which is to basically give a server stat ranking. It won't be perfect by any means, but at the very least it would help buffer the 'n00b gets pwned hard' syndrome because they'd know ahead of time they were entering a server with high average skill level/etc. (I even tossed in the idea of an optional upward only looking skill level browsing filter). *shrug*

I am not sure why peoples ELO's fluctuate so wildly. Mine has been pretty much stable. Then again I haven't played in over a week...but from the time I started to when I stopped (don't want to overplay Shang just yet ) it was stable.

It is probably a morphed form of the ELO, tailored to the game (kind of like how MS has made that ranking thing). I don't pay much attention to the stats, never have because they can be rather meaningless, unless of course they get it right. In which case, it could work well but just to offer a generalized idea of the skill level in a server to new players. I think there is a point where many players disregard the stats altogether because they find that is not what is important.

I think my killing sprees are right, but it shows me like 14 monster kills? I'm pretty sure I have done less than ten, if not counting getting monster kill several times in a row (like doing 8 fast frags). However, I have tons of awards I have not got, like gazillion blue streaks before I had seen even one myself. On the other hand, it seems impossible to get headhunter? I have jacked up like 40-50 frags on sniper, just to try out if I can get that award, but nope. It never comes. Same goes for Combo king. I never get it, but I still have it in my stats. And flak master..

And yes, it doesn't count bullseyes.

Edit : Elo score actually doesn't fluctuate that much. It's just that it has such a small scale, that it's not designed for a game with half a million players. A drop of one point will drop your position by several hundred places if you're in the midsection. And as you can get tons of frags or deaths in a single play session, your ELO score can change rather quickly by 30-50 points. In example, if there's a pro gamer on server, who just started playing and has ~1000 point ELO, he will eat your rank away at amazing speed, until he has reached his real ELO stat (like 1500-1600). On the other hand, if there are noobs, who have by some weird chance won matches and got an unrealistically high rank, killing them will boost your ELO really quickly.

I don't even think I have been online with the vehicle map. I have 1 vehicle kill listed

I have a suspicion that it's based on a who-killed-who basis, as if every kill is a match, but there must be something else in the system. In chess competitions, ratings are inflated due to the increasing amount of matches played. In UT3, if it's done on a kill basis, then the ratings must be inflated indeed... but they aren't. The top 50 have ratings of around 1600 or so. Similiar to some other people's, mine has been fluctuating around in the 1500s even during the times when I haven't played online, so I don't know exactly how the ratings are changed around.

I'm starting to think the rating system has nothing to do with your skill level or kills at all. I had a ranking of around 750 (global rank), played about 10 death matches inwhich I won about 7 of them with frag/death scores of 25/2 and 25/7 and so on. I checked my global rank afterwards and it rose to over 2000.... what the hell? Of course my EOL didn't change a whole lot so maybe it had something to do with more people playing or my initial rank of 750ish was just a fluke.
I give up on stats, they make no sense to me and aren't worth the time and effort to actually try to get better just to see your name on a list. I'm just going to stick to having fun like I did with the first UT, but first I need the War Cow skin back!!! pleassseee Epic? I want to use my old nick, Super_Cow again and fly high!!

After hours on end of this ranking system annoying me I decided to look into and see how it works; so here is how it has worked for me!

Say you're ranked 200,000 right now, log on and play on a vCTF and make sure your team win and you should be ranked arround 130,000 after one win.

It isn't based on kills, deaths, flags capture, flags returned or whatever. The ranking system is based on if your team/you win the match, wether you score or not!

I know you did well, as far as you played and you died relatively few times but I'm sure what happened was some newb player that had a rank of like 200,000 killed you once or twice in those rounds which will take you way down with these stats. I don't really think the stats work that well now. I was ranked like 200 something, I played maybe 10 1v1 games with some pretty skilled players, I actually won a couple of times at the end I think I was ranked 19,000 or something. The reason why is probably because the players I was playing with never went and played a bunch of dm maps with newbies so they were only being ranked against themselves in 1v1s meaning they do not get very high frag counts and since they never compare them selves directly to the newbs the game can't correctly decipher their skill, it only looks at kills not how well you executed a combo.

I have found that you can't really advance that well if you play games with newbies, you have to do really well, I mean like 2 deaths or less and even then if a better player weakens you to 1 health and the newb ranked 300,000 finishes you off they don't take that into consideration either, they just lower your ranking way down.
