Unreal 2004 or wait for Unreal 3

    Hello all,

This my first post. Anyway I first played unreal tourny on the original Xbox.
I now have an Xbox 360 and PC.
Until Unreal 3 comes out is Unreal 2004 worth a purchase?
Will Unreal 2004 players switch to the newer
Unreal 3 meaning more people to challenge online
    with Unreal 3.

Will my pc spec ( with recent mini upgrade ) be good enough for the new version.

    AMD athlon x 2 4200, 40gb 10,000rpm and 250 gb spare drive 7200rpm
256mb Nvidia Geforce 6600, 3gb ram corsair value
Nvidia onboard sound, ASUS An8 sli deluxe board
    Windows xp pro.

Your GF6600 will just be able to run UT3 at minimum spec. Low res, low detail, low framerate.

hi and welcome erm to answer your question about UT2004 then yes i would buy it to see the comparison between the 2 versions and if you can afford both copies.. but if not i would not buy UT2004 simply because most of the users still currently playing it will be moving across to UT3... Your specs should run the new 1 on low to medium settings and you will get quite good fps if your lucky hope this helps you

Not worth the purchase if your planning to play UT3, but your pc will not be able to run UT3 very well unless you buy a 8800GT or something similar graphics cards.

Even if you decide that UT3 doesn't run, buying UT2k4 is waste now, the next months you'll only be able to actively play TAM, TDM/DM, ONS and iCTF. The other mods still have some servers with people but don't expect much, and this will decrease in not to long either. In the end I expect only TAM and ONS will still be played (most active public mods).

I'd defenitely go for the 8800 GT, available for 200 euros and better than the 8800GTS. Best bang for buck available at the moment.

I would go ahead and get UT2004 as it will, in essence, be a different game. It's still fun to play and there are loads of mods, skins and custom characters for it.

And don't listen to the rest of these yahoo's. You will be able to play UT3 decently with your rig. You don't need the latest and greatest hardware unless you want to play the game at 1600 x 1200 with everything maxed.

The only thing I have better than you is a Nvidia 7600 GT 256. I can play the demo at 1024 x 768 with all settings maxed and it looks great. Now I know the textures are not the highest resolution that will be found in the retail but it looks good enough for me and I get 45-50 fps constantly.

Yes he will be able to play, but with minimum video settings, his Geforce 6600 is pushing it. he probably would like to play the game and have it look somewhat decent. But yes ur write he dosnt need the latest and greatest

You can download the Unreal 2004 Demo for free and try it out(just google for it). Remember that just like with UT3, the graphics and textures are toned down in the demo to keep download size small. I think the retail DVD costs just about $10 in many places.

i would recommend getting 2004, especially with runestorms ballistic weapons mod, it really shows that the Uengine2 still has the potential to look almost next gen, i say get 2004 as well because it is nice to have a a version of the game that you can run on high, but still i think you could probably get away with full medium on 800x600(which would look sweet still if the full release has decent AA) with ut3 on your current setup, because your cards better than mine(mobility radeon 9700) and i can run full demo settings

Thanks for all the replies folks
I have never been a hardcore gamer
but feel I could start to make use
of my pc to play sme great games.
It's only a soctet 939 board but can still pack some
power. I feel my graphics card is fine but do understand
an improved card may help but 200 pounds is too much
for a 8800gt?. There must be a good compromise.
my board does have a dual graphics card option
so a second 6600 might be possible? I need to check.
By the way I think this monitor is a good bet for gamers
tell if know of a better value option

Mind using space at the end of a sentence? makes it easier to read.

Don't get a second 6600. If you want much better FPS than what you currently have without robbing the bank, there are options that are not as expensive as the 8800 series of video cards. My system is close to yours other than the video card (see my sig). My 8600GTS has done extremely well. You can see some of my stats in this benchmark thread:

                            http://forums.epicgames.com/showthre...=581284&page=9

Another good card roughly in the same price range (maybe a little cheaper) is the ATI X1950GT which ranks a little higher in Tom's Hardware VGA charts (I just prefer Nvidia over ATI).

i would recomend getting ut2004 if u can pick it up cheap - great game and your pc will run it. ut3 on the other hand will look terrible and run at under 30 fps with low res and most stuff off on your pc it will be a big disapointment if you have seen it running on demo vids - the xb360 version is the one to get in my opinion. the game is designed for console now antway
