I suggest that you look at your motherboard manual and check out the ram section to eliminate capability issues. If you dont have the manual for the motherboard you can download it from the manufactures website

Check the reviews for both the motherboard and the ram.

for example here is a review for the ram:

Whats awsome about quality pc2-6400 ram is that they can overclock to pc2-8500 relatively easy, then again pc2-8500 can overclock just a bit more except for at about twice the price of pc2-6400 =/ I checked some reviews for pc2-8500 corsair 2x1gb and I see those that do overclock usually get at best about 1200mhz, which is 200mhz more then what you can expect from the memory you have linked to. One thing you have to think about though is that you *might* get a pair of bad sticks that perform at pc2-6400 specs yet refuse to overclock to 1000+mhz =X

For half the price of pc2-8500 I was willing to take the chance with pc2-6400, and was very happy when it did overclock to 1000Mhz. My sticks were patriot rather then corsair, but in my ram comparison on newegg reviews I found crucial+patriot+corsair to be all good overclockers.

One thing you have to consider is how far your cpu can overclock and what possible ram speeds will operate at that overclock. I've only overclocked an amd x2 processor, so I have no clue about how intel processors overclock so I can't really help you there =/

Just as an example I found that my amd x2 processor overclocked to 3.0Ghz with an htt of 250Mhz, a cpu multiplier of 12, and using 800Mhz ddr2 setting in bios my memory performed exactly at 1000Mhz. Lets say that my cpu could actually overclock to 3.2Ghz, but my memory couldn't go a hair over 1000Mhz. Again lets say I am insisting on having that extra .2Ghz regardless of the ram settings. To get a stable ram speed below 1000Mhz I would have to increase my cpu multiplier to 12.5 with an htt of 256 for a total cpu core of 12.5x256==3200Mhz, however my memory divider would go from ceiling(12/2)==6 to ceiling(12.5/2)==7 with the memory clocked at 3200Mhz/7==457Mhz[914Mhz ddr2]. In this what if scenario I've gained an extra .2Ghz cpu speed but lost an overall 86Mhz ram speed =/

HOWEVER if I had bought that pc2-8500 ram which seems to overclock to a maximum of 1200Mhz then the best I could do is find a memory divider of 6 since a memory divider of 5 would be way to high of a clock for the 1200Mhz ram. 3200Mhz/6==533Mhz[1066Mhz ddr2] 3200Mhz/5==640Mhz[1280Mhz ddr2>1200Mhz ddr2] So now the question wouldn't be should I buy that ram that can overclock to 1000Mhz or that ram that costs double the price yet can overclock to 1200Mhz, instead it would be should I buy that ram that I can get to operate at 914Mhz with my cpu overclocked to 3.2Ghz or that ram that costs double the price but will only operate at 1066Mhz with my cpu overclocked to 3.2Ghz.

The above is an amdx2 what if scenario, however I have no clue what an intel what if might look like. I tried looking around the web for some intel overclocking guides, however I don't think any of the info would sink in until I have an actual intel system that I could mess around with the bios settings. Oh that and its early in the morning and time for me to go to bed... so good night and sorry I can't help with the nuances of an intel mobo >.>

EDIT: his mobo is DDR2 800 capable, and anything higher you can just overclock the FSB/norhtbridge w/e you need to overclock on intel mobo[dont' really know since I haven't messed with intel mobo's yet] to achieve. All he really has to do is check the bios to make sure the mobo can supply at least about 2.2v to the ram chips. Thats one expensive mother mobo, so I'm just gonna take a good guess and say sure it probably could supply enough voltage to fry his ram chips if he wanted them to O.o

Both boards perform identical can are ideal for overclocking so I do not see why it wouldnt supply 2.2 volts.

That ram is on the QVL so it is guaranteed to work. I have been looking at OCZ Reaper HPC Edition which I have seen other people use with the Striker Extreme.

corsair makes extremely good ram and $100 is a steal for 2 gigs especially with that rebate. I'd say go for it and almost any motherboard will support DDR2800 just look for something that makes you happy. If I could I'd trade in my gigabyte for one with SLI and an AMD socket. But oh well. I love my rig still

go with kingston hyper x if the motherboard supports it, its very stable and worth it in the long run

That OCZ ram looks awesome with those handles though.. Thanks for all the input.. I'll double check the manual after downloading it from their site to see if it's definitely compatible.. maybe it will say if the timings are too.. I was mostly worried about that..

You can always underclock ram in the bios =O My patriot pc2-6400 has from factory specs of 4-4-4-12 2.2v, however the bios auto sets it to 5-5-5-15 1.8v. A quick look into the bios and I found the settings to change them to the 4-4-4-12 1T[command rate] 2.2v just to check if they will work at those clocks and at 800Mhz. When you overclock you also have to loosen the timings of the ram usually so they can achieve those higher settings. Again using my memory upgrade as an example I started with the ram running at 800Mhz at 4-4-4-12 1T timings at 2.2v, bumping up the clock by only 30 or so Mhz I had to increase the command rate to 2T for the bios to boot, then at around 930Mhz I had to switch from 4-4-4-12 2T timings to 5-5-5-15 2T timings, then right at 1000Mhz I had to increase the voltage from 2.2v to 2.3v which was ok since it was even specified in the epp info using cpu-z.

Oh but ummm.... I think there are cases where the bios will try to use the lower timings like say 4-4-4-12 1T yet somehow will NOT change the voltage, which means even the bios won't post after installing the ram. I believe the runaround from the customer service people was something like:

<<put in old ram to change the ram settings to underclocked settings first, then install the new ram and change the settings for the new ram.... OH you're building your system from scratch and don't have old ram??? Ok go out and buy some old ram then....>> ...buy old ram to install the new ram Xp

Ya thats about how one review was for one set of ram; the poor guy wasn't very happy =X Some people in their review actually rate the ram down for being recognized by default at underclocked settings, however after reading that one review about the poor guy that couldn't get his new system up and running I was more then happy my ram was recognized by default at underclocked settings.

I checked those ram reviews again for the ram you linked, and here is a 'con' someone has listed:

"Cons: One stick out of four shows as different model number, and does not post JDEC or EPP timings. Could be the application (CPU-Z). I manually switched timings to 4-4-4-12 and bumped up voltage to 2.1V. Everything was stable with no problems. Running 5-5-5-18 @ 1.8V now, no need for all that speed."

Some people don't seem to understand that not booting up the first time at optimal speeds is a good thing. It allows people with mobo's that can't support those timings to boot up at standard timings the first time, then to try to change the settings in bios after a successfull install.


Going back to work >.> Going to be gone a few days... Last thought don't forget to change the voltage like I did when I installed my ram and thought my ram was bad =p Also the easiest way to see what your mobo can do is to look into the bios.
