    Sound Card Recomendations?

Ok I just bought senheisser 280 Pro's and everytime i pick up a powerup the sound cracks, I know the headphoens aren't fauly because I have tried other ones. My sound card is kinda old, what decent sound card can I get for a good price to run UT3 and get some optimization out of my headphones.

The alternative to Creative X-Fi would be the Auzentech Prelude

Creative X-Fi is the "default" soundcard to get, there are a ton more brands out there but I don't know a lot about most of them, and EAX is proprietary to creative cards, and many games supports it.

Really? I also have the Audigy 2 ZS, I've been holding off on switching to Vista (even though I can hardly play ut2k4 in XP because nvidia is too lazy to make working drivers), I hope there won't be problems when I do.

They are supporting it. They are just kinda slow though. MS dropped HAL with DX10. That is part of it. It works though. I got a X-Fi sound card took updating the drivers but after that havn't had a problem. Any game that has OpenAl works fine. Plus they got ALchemy X-Fi out now. So they are getting there. Not all of the old features are supported. If you go to the site and look at the drivers it will tell you which ones aren't right now.

EDIT: Not sure if they are supporting there older cards on Vista though.

I'd stick with XP for a while then. You need quite a powerful PC to run Vista (especially games on vista), so unless you have something like a Dual Core, Geforce 8800 system (or equivalent AMD/ATI system) I'd stick with XP.

I do have a GeForce 8800 and an AMD 64 X2, but I haven't wanted to put down the cash for Vista until it's a bit more established.

so whats your issue with it not running? Your system should be fine!

just get the latest drivers and you'll be sweet.

I bought and am returning the $180 Razer Barracuda AC-1 I was not impressed with the positional audio in UT99 and UT2K4 (UT3 is **** regardless of what you use)...anyways, a lot abrupt seperation in rear left and rear right and overall just not as dynamic and accurate as the X-Fi (both in XP & Vista and using different speakers)...I had an Audigy2 ZS...it was nice, but the X-Fi is stunning...the 24bit bit-accurate playback mode is phenominal for music playback as well...you can leave your EQ flat too and get perfect sound (assuming you have good speakers too)...

                            Interesting 3nvy.

So the X-Fi actually makes a difference?

I've been using the Audigy 2 ZS for years now. I've had some Logitech Z-2300 THX Certified speakers for a while now, and they are great, 8" ported sub ftw.

isp_of_doom: the Audidgy 2 ZS is a great card - the only reason I upgraded from it to the X-Fi was to take some of the load off of the CPU as the X-Fi can process a lot more information a lot faster (see specs & reviews). The positional audio is also a bit better and the music quality - WOW - you won't believe your ears...be sure to turn on the 24-bit playback option in the software. It has other options that the ZS doesn't have but best thing to do would be to see the online reviews on that...that said, I highly recommend it as an upgrade. Note though: there is a bit of a bug with some systems where it won't play out the rear speakers (hopefully next software release will fix this...headphone option works perfectly though for total EAX surround)...hope that helps.
