With a properly designed HUD, you don't/won't need the constant and repeating audio messages.

The problem with people being able to pick up their own team's flag is that they'll just hold on to it and run around their own base or go hide it.
This too can be solved with proper game/HUD design. CTF should not be a game of hide and seek. For example, the 'radar' dots on the HUD can point to the flags, not the bases (who needs dots to show the bases anyway? that's always been just plain dumb IMO. It's not like the bases are moving).

When I'm playing UT, I strongly consider the immersion level in Unreal Universe, wich means that I'm playing the tournament in a television transmission. I believe that the constant and repeating audio messages are part of that immersion and bring more pressure to the players and teams as a whole.

For players like me, without the Unreal Universe, Unreal games wouldn't be so fun.

Fair enough. Can't argue with that. And allowing the player to set various levels of audio transmissions is already allowed. No reason a person couldn't enjoy the best of both worlds.

OT P.S. (sounds like maybe you'd like the spectator cameras we've thought about bringing back from our Q2 version - spectators are shown as actual floating tv camera type of things - it's great when you got a few flying around following you and watching you play. Time to ham it up. )

ChaosCTF currently has the 'carry the flag' rules, and if UT3 doesn't ship with the option, we'll add it again. IMO, it's always been the best way to play. And when you add vehicles and larger maps, I feel it's the only way to play.

UT2004 had dropflag, but there was no GUI for the keybind - thus many folks were not aware of it (we added the GUI for it in ChaosCTF though, as we felt it was important enough to be there). I also agree that there should be a bit of a 'toss' when dropping the flag, not the straight drop it is now. This was another feature on our CTF wish-list, but for whatever reason that one just never got added in yet. But again, if it's not in UT3 vanilla, it'll be on our list again.

Please keep us in mind if vanilla CTF doesn't have all you're looking for. Or if you just want some variety.
I liked what was added to chaos UT for 2004 except for the melee weapons and 3rd person views

It would be like playing CTF with moving flags. (The CTF4 and CTFM mods, 4-team CTF, are kind of like that...and what I described is exactly what happens.) I don't think that's good for game play, but I don't see any reason why that can't be a mutator (you have to carry your own flag back to its stand). Perhaps a good mutator would be one that requires teams to carry their own flag back but that also automatically returns it to the stand, regardless of whether someone on the team is carrying it, after, say, 15 seconds.
I didnt mean to be able to take it from their own base but to return it to their own base, but as said the compass it the top o fth eut2004 hud could always point to the flag and not the base... and non of what you said would b a problem for bot play which is how i like it.. with bots

Yes, I'm an UT voyeur, LOL. I spend at least 30% of my time just watching CTF and DM matches and I love the camera mobility

              ----------------------

I do agree about the need of carry your flag back to your base instead of just pass through it. And I don't like the translocator in CTF.

You can turn melee weapons off in the server settings

They should have included VoiP in ut2k4 and then you could talk to your team. That would be cool. Oh wait... !

I gave up on all the voice stuff. Listening to an 11 yr old talking about irrelevant stuff and the usually foul language just wasn't worth it.

maybe some key to give flag to another player/ vehicle crew when you close to them, so you should not translocate. Or even give to vehicle crew - because there is no translocator.

                      -if there is no teammates nearby, you just drop flag;
-if there is teammate / friendly vehicle, you give flag/orb to him.
