    Actual bases in VCTF maps?

I'm hoping that somebody who's seen all the trailers and sshots might have noticed somewhere- are there actual bases in the vctf map(s) that have been shown? Or does it look as if you can drive right up to the flag?

Any chance some pic or trailer has shown this? If you noticed this detail somewhere, please share.

(I'm hoping that the VCTF AI in UT3 is capable of playing decently with real bases, because I believe that will lead to less 'drive-by' maps being made)

    Thanks!

The map we played... Corruption... has the flag housed inside of a building. You can drive into the building, but the flag is surrounded by a low wall.

Some flags are open, some are more protected.

Thanks hal. I won't jump to conclusions just yet, but that sounds an awful lot like UT2004-style. Potentially meaning we are in same boat in UT3 as we are now.

        Thanks for the reply sir.

As you're probably aware, UT2004 required the 'white road' basically right up to the flag, or the bots would not play it properly. This meant no real bases that required you to get off your horse and actually fight your way in.. and then back out of. Do you have any further insight into what UT3 holds in store for us in that area?

Currently we have to make a kinda crummy choice; make a better layout... that the bots cannot play, or make a 'drive-by' layout in order to have bot support.

Here's hoping it's either fixed outta-the-box, or at least accessible to a modder. Got my fingers crossed.

Well, support for vCTF in UT2004 was very basic. It was never tested with bots or in the context of a shipping game. It was just easy enough to make a test map for, make sure the flag offsets on the vehicles looked OK, slap on a few sensible rules for what vehicles could carry a flag, and shipping it with the game to let the community go nuts.

            Understood. And thank you.

Looking forward to seeing what's new.

Unfortunatley the community did go nuts and not in a good way. I often refer to it as the ******* step-child of UT.

This time around I am hoping that it will be different. Over at http://www.vctfcentral.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=69.html we are currently discussing the gametype and what we can do to keep it from falling apart like it did during 2k7.

Hopefully now that is supported that things will be massivley different.

                willhaven,

Do you know anything of the translocater, or is it still pretty much undecided info.?

The only thing I can really say about the trans is that it's not in any vehicle game types.

Hmm, I remember it was mentioned that there will be no gametype-distinction between VCTF and CTF, so I really hope you meant to say that it's not available in maps that utilize vehicles, because if we had to use the hoverboard instead of the trans in classic CTF matches, just because the CTF gametype includes VCTF maps as well, the community would most certainly grab forks and torches and march to Raleigh... or something like that. But I know that you know this, and because of that I'm sure you guys considered it. But it sounded a bit disturbing nonetheless...
Or did you split the gametypes up again? In that case, everything would be fine.

Sorry, basically we are trying to get together what's left of the vCTF community so when UT3 goes gold we hit things running.

that would be a good solution to this all especially since im runnin low on torches and too busy to march to NC anytime soon... and i hope Epic ppl are still reading the replies on the subject in this thread

You have the trans in non-vehicle CTF. You either have a hoverboard or a translocator depending on whether the map has vehicles or not.

Then, what happens in maps with both indoor and outdoor zones? Let's imagine a map with 2 big bases built in a classic style (ramps, z-axis, no vehicles...), separated by a big piece of terrain where vehicles get into the action. You need the hoverboard to go across the terrain zone in the middle, but you do not want to skate across a bunch of platforms once inside the enemy base!
