Importing a terrain made in max to the ut3 editor

How do you import a terrain made in max and get the Unreal Editor to actually look at it as a terrain that you can walk on instead of just as a static mesh?

IIRC, you have to generate a heightmap from your mesh and import the heightmap into a new terrain.

There is no way of simply turning a mesh into a terrain actor; you will have to use the height information of the mesh, turn it into a greyscale heightmap, and import that heightmap into a new terrain you create inside the editor.

Wait, is that even possible? I can't say I've ever done it. ;P

Hopefully this puts you on the right track, but as far as I know, there is no way you can convert a mesh into a terrain actor inside the editor, and you will have to use a height map.

Alternatively, could you place the mesh in the level and use it as a stencil for editing terrain? It might be a good alternative, depending on the detail and scope of your mesh terrain.
