Best thing to do is ask Evil Engine on that one site I gave you a link to. It is very involved I can tell you that much. You will need to make an investment in some good software. 3dmax or maya ... they each have different strengths and weaknesses and both were used during the work on HaloUT. Now if you do custom models that takes a whole bunch of work, but alot of people get familiar with texturing and rigging and stuff by importing existing models and getting them to look right and work in UTx games.

Before you tackle making models for UT3 you might want to go back and work with UT2K4 since it is easier but a lot of the same principles will apply. You also have to learn how to make the proper animations if you are going to do custom animations and also how to make use of and tweak the stock animations in a game. EE and other competent modellers in the community have been doing this stuff for no less than four years ... in EE's case it goes back to UT2K3 so don't expect to crank out models that look as good as his any time soon ... you'll also have to learn about specular masking ... normal bumpmapping, advanced lighting techniques etc. as well as making your own materials. Good luck man ... we can always use more modelers in the community so I hope it turns out good for you.

Creating models is not a simple task. Best thing to do would be to use a program thats actually used out in the industry.

These programs arnt cheap and can be very daunting when you first lay eyes onto them. I would suggest using either 3D Studio Max, or Maya. With Maya you can get a personal learning edition which is totally free. You just cant use it for making and selling 3d models but u can use it for stuff like making unreal levels. 3D Studio Max has a 30 day trial version.

You can find them both at http://usa.autodesk.com

as for sites for learning theres tons....

highend3d.com is one of them like i said tons a google search will find them
