From my understanding cooking a map is essentially converting all resources from external to internal {All belonging to the map instead of separate packages.}
Essentially this unification of allows for quicker loading of the map.
But this also increases the size of the file because it's the host of all the materials, meshes, sequences, and so on; regardless what outside devices/resources you made it with.
