    How does fog work?

    I am working an open map and was wondering if adding height fog to the entire map would be a good idea. I am basically looking for a good looking clip plane effect so you do not see the whole map. Now does the engine render this anyway, if you can not see it due to the fog, and then post process the fog effect? Or does it not worry about figuring out things you can not see through the fog? Does fog slow things down a lot? I am just not sure exactly how fog works now a days. It used to be use it lightly and at your own risk. I would like to optimize the map and if fog can help it run better due to not seeing things in the distance great. Or will this have the opposite affect I am looking for?
