    CTF-Gael2 [Beta Version][PC][PS3]

    Name: CTF-Gael2 (Gael II)
    Version: Beta v2.0
Compatibility: PC and PS3 with Titan Pack and v2.1 Patch
Description: Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. Capture The Flag up close and personal.
Comments: Brought Gael back to its original design and architecture, and made it into a Capture The Flag map instead of DeathMatch, as been the case in the last two beta releases. You should have between 2 - 6 players are recommended for this map, and should be better than it was before.

    cool...d/L
just a first observation from the screenies: the central platform seems to be overpowered...shield belt and superhealth on same spot...bit too much imho

Well, I remember that the original Gael's central platform randomized between the heavy armor and the health keg, tried to find out how to make that platform randomize those items like the original UT2k4 version did, but for right now, this seemed to be the only way I knew to do things.

All righty-oh...Did a couple of major things here... First of all, I switched the theme to resemble that of an Asian temple courtyard of sorts. Also, because I did have this as being more of an outdoor-type map, I also added in a heavy rainstorm effect...also did some post processing to make it as tho that the heavy rain is blurring your vision in the inner ring of the map. This is Beta v1.1 right now, hoping that this one will be better using the Eastern theme. I'm in the process of updating the screenshots and new cook links above. Just trying to set my Gael remake in a better way than some others around here... Guess you can say that I was inspired from other games with Asian themes, and thinking that could work for a map like this.

Okay...updated the links and screenshots up above, as well as other details. Hopefully you'll like the new theme better.

Looks like a good base. A few things that popped out at me were
          • The swirl lights in the sky (seems to busy, maybe this is lightening?)
          • The paper lanterns ( I really think that is one of the worst Asian assets available)
          • The Blur effect you are using is to extreme
          • The weather (I can it on the ground and I can hear but there is no rain, seems to me like only the most experienced veteran mappers have been able to pull off realistic looking weather, and even then sometimes it is not right)

I like that there is a small arena feel to the map. You may want to rethink the Asian theme. From what I have seen most ppl either tend to love it or hate it. Looks like you are having some success. It is good to see people making maps especially remakes.

Well, I used the blur effect to make it like it's a blinding rain effect, as you'd expect from a heavy, foggy rain storm.
Also, I was inspired by an old 3D Realms game by the name of Shadow Warrior to rewrite the map like this. If you want me to go back to the high-tech theme, fine.

However, as stated elsewhere, I've always been a fan of close-quarter combat-type maps, and this one was no exception from the UT2Kx era. Trying to add that dojo-temple type influence will only make this even better, imo.

The fact that you have an open mind is so cool.

I thought the blur effect was on and off and that makes it seems strange.

As far as the other theme I do think the map would be better received with a high tech theme.

All righty, guess I'll be using the Asian/Rain Storm theme for another map I had in mind...beside remaking older UT maps, I'm also hoping to bring back maps from older games like Shadow Warrior, Duke 3D, Doom II, Quake 1, etc... (that I made back in those days, nothing from those games themselves) guess I let those themes get in the way of doing this map, I admit it.

I like small dm maps too. That is why I took interest in this one

Yep...as stated, I've been mapping since the mid-to-late '90s when the big FPS boom was going on. So, I do go back some way. Just trying to get back into that touch after all these years. Been almost 10 years since I was a serious mapper, I've been rather hit and miss, just haven't had the same time I used to.

I have done a powerups randomisation on my map DM-Woodrun, if you have some knowledges with kismet, take a look on it (see my sign) to see how I have done that feature

All right...good. For now, I'm probably gonna put Gael on the back burner. I'm currently seeking reviving an old map from my Quake days, and I'm currently trying to look for it somewhere. It was called "Fortress of Death" or something like that, or simply Fortress.bsp. Of course, I'm probably gonna be using more static mesh than anything else in the UT3 remake of it. I'll have to see if I can find that anywhere.

I decided to get back to redoing this remake, and right now, I'm in the process of going more towards turning Gael into a Capture The Flag map, as stated in the remake thread. I'm putting in the finishing touches, and alpha testing this idea. Will probably have CTF-Gael2 ready to replace this one over the weekend, stay tuned.

All right, I got Beta v2.0 up, switched it from DeathMatch to Capture The Flag. Hopefully this map will play better this way, just experimenting with this gameplay type, considering the symetrical geometry and the well-suited platform bases for the flags. We'll soon see what this will do for you all.
