    DM-Valon (The making of...)

    Hi there,

I’m working on this map since few months now. I started to build it right after I’ve finished Greed-Mégane & DM-Mako L2 (those aren’t been release yet).

I decided to use a new theme. A mix of day / night theme with a orange (industrial / rusty) look. The base (playable area) is 100% BSP with 100% custom materials while the exterior of the map (city below) are stock meshes with custom materials.

At the beginning, I was going for a clean look and a day theme.

I changed my mind in the dev process & decided to use a new theme as showed below

I’m using around 2500 brushes & still add some ! I’m trying to build a map with lot’s of complex geometry and I found it very hard ! Still learning how to use the builder brush after all these years lol

There is no download link at the moment & dunno when I'll release it neither. Enjoy the WIP !

Hey Steve, thanks for livening things up around here! I've got to say the orange sky change is awesome! That right there helps give it a really unique look. Keep up the good work!

This is a very nice looking map and I can't wait to get my hands on it! So to speak. All this low poly mapping reminds me so very much of the good old Unreal Tournament and I kinda miss that time. Nevertheless, having this low poly style nowadays is just awesome, because it is interesting to see, what people are capable to do by using high res textures and mostly simple brushes.

You know, if you would release both versions, I would really love that, but that's just an idea. You are the master! As you mentioned in the beginning of your post, I'm also looking forward to your other unreleased maps! Keep up the good work!

Great looking stuff bro Never would have expected less from you.

              Coming from the screenshots:

Awesome use of Geometry and textures as always. **** those pk02 textures look great.

Lightning seems colory and nice variations of warm and cold colors.
Some lights need some tweaking from what I can see. Like the Cyan colored ones in this picture feel abit washed away.

But its just a WIP, and I know you should already be aware of this Just pointing it out.

Can't wait to a beta of this!

THX all, it's very cool to see others interest for this map

                    PS: I've answered my pm's

                    @Dark

Hey little bro, THX for post. About the green lights, it is intended they are not dominating the scene since the 2 main colors are blue / yellow. I only add them to bring a soft color contrast & to light up surrounding materials. I must say that I too, really like the geometry in this part of the map

****, this turned out really nice so far!
It has some sort of Quake look to it, very oldschool in overall atmosphere (I love that). The geometry looks complex although not overstuffed and is still easy on the eyes from what I see on those screenshots, materials really suit it well as well.
I see you also used a delicate post process to boost the contrasts a bit, didn't you?

If you would make a rough judgement of the progress, how much do you consider to be done in %?

Indeed, you're right about the Quake look because I'm using a specific Quake texture pack I also trying to mix the right materials together. It's not always obvious since all textures are simply awesome (very detailed) but using to much of them everywhere make the scene look to busy. I'm happy everyone like the look so far

                        I would say ±75 - 80%.

                              2900 brushes reach

The worst is that it could be much more than that if I didn't know how to use the extruding builder brush function !!!
