Phoronix kept up with the dangling carrot and you can read the later news there(from 2009?). I think the middleware in question was never disclosed. (examples of middleware are Physx, Speedtree, Gamespy.) Wine play has improved and mostly everything works now, except for some menu limitations when playing with mouse.
