strange jumping and dodging behaviour

    strange jumping and dodging behaviour

    Hello,

    I'm new to this forum, and I have a issue after playing for 6o mins or so.

    When I play, after a while jumping isn't allmost possible anymore, it's like 2 small jumps and dodging is also not possible.

    It's very strange because I can play for a long time till at one moment this happens. Also when I go back to the menu, the whole menu is blank and I can't do anything but ctrl + alt del to go out of UT3.

    I have:

    i7 860 processor
    HD 5870 gfx card
    patch 5 installed
    Windows 7 32 bit

    Not sure what's causing that. I know that if you play online for a while you can experience lag which makes dodging seem jerky and jumps are some times missed. Reconnecting to the server fixes this.

    The menu thing is a mystery to me. You could backing up and then deleting your ini files (\Documents\My Games\Unreal Tournament 3\UTGame\Config) and see if that fixes it. If it does restore them one at a time until you figure out what file is causing it. I'm going with UTengine.ini or UTgame.ini if it is an ini file. You could also try the simple UI background found here. Basically it replaces the 60+ mb map that UT3 uses for a background with a still picture. I run it just because it's slightly faster and I don't care about the look of the UI.

    If that doesn't fix it try looking at your log files (Documents\My Games\Unreal Tournament 3\UTGame\Logs). The file you want to look at is your Launch.log. Skip to the end of it and you should see the error it encountered. Copy and paste that here and maybe we can help some more.

      Great, I will examin these logs, apparently the last log was of the last game, before this all happenend


      Well, I was looking through these forums and found something about starting UT3 with -onethread.

      I will do some tests.

      Edit: about the jump sounds, when you make a normall double jump, you here first the "huupp" sound (he jumps) 2nd you hear a sort of slitting sound "sliittt" that's the second jump.

      When my error occurs, you only hear the second sound, maybe a openAL error?

        Hi, here is my log after the strange jumping error occured. Now it happened after 15 minutes. The last lines are the manual ctrl + alt + del shutdown.

        I hope someone knows whats wrong.

        btw: this was without the -onethread startup. I will now test it with -onethread startup

            Sorry you misunderstood about the logs. The jumping/dodging problem is most likely related to a memory leak as it tends to build up and get worse over time. That won't show up in logs.

            The reason I mentioned logs was for your other problem.

              I can't rejoin and have to hard shutdown UT3, after that I can play again, but then it's waiting when it happends again.

              As for now, I think the dodge/jumping problem comes with the i7 processor. When playing (for now) on -onethread, i can play for a hour, I have to test this more I think.

              The menu part comes with the jump/dodge problem.

                I know multiple people running the i7 920 and a couple running the i5 750 all under windows 7 64 bit with no problems. I know no one running under windows 7 32 bit, so you could be right, this could be the problem.

                Why aren't you running windows 7 64 bit ?

                    For a start it supports more than 4GB of ram. Also if you do get a 64 bit program it has the potential to run faster. Runs 32 bit programs every bit as well as 32 bit version.

                    There are some poorly coded games that don't run well in some systems with more than 4GB of ram. Other than that I don't see a downside to going to the 64 bit OS.

                      edit: even with -onethread, i got this strange jump/dodge behaviour. Then I thought that maybe MS Essentials could be the problem, after killing that, I could play the rest of the evening * night :P

                          Sounds like a lag symptom. I get a similar problem online after awhile , pretty sure it's some sync issue errors due to packet loss. Reckon UT3 is far less forgiving to dodgy connections than Ut2004 ever was. It may be multiple player packet loss / re-send that's bottlenecking the servers, idk. But they're definitely for the most part worse than UT2004.

                          If it's not your connection, you could try looking to see if anything is downclocking mid game by logging both cpu and gpu whilst you play.

                            The lag thing occurring overtime has been happening to people as long as I've been playing UT3. So I think you are experiencing standard UT3 online play. The real problem sounds like whatever is crashing your game when you exit to menu. That's what I'd be focused on fixing. That's what you should be looking for in your log files.
