UT3 Black prob: Can't 'fire to start'

Has anyone heard a fix for the problem where UT3 Black starts fine from steam, works fine in the menu, but once a game is started the game won't get past the 'fire to start' message?

I get same problem whether I start multiplayer or instant action. I've tried setting the fire key to several different keyboard keys and mouse buttons, but no change. The only action I can take is to get a command prompt from TAB and quit out (keyboard works fine keying into command prompt after TAB). The mouse and keyboard are recognized without issue in the menu.

I've tried changing the mouse to USB port, uninstalling UT3 standard (which was crashing anyway after I loaded black) and re-installing UT3 black. Before re-installing, I manually removed all of the ut3 registry entries that the uninstall left behind, and all of the files too. No matter what, same exact problem.

I have a friend who's experiencing the same problem, and I've seen two other threads of players experiencing the same problem - none with a solution. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

CPU: E6750 Dual 2.66 GHz, overclocked to 3.0 GHz
Video: Radeon X1950 Pro (512 MB, 400MHz DAC)
Mem: 4GB Physical, 8GB Virtual
OS: XP, DX9.0c
No problems found by dxdiag, no problems running any other programs/games.

Delete your UTInput.ini file and restart the game. This should fix the problem.
