    Unreal3 Engine issues? (Midway Support gave up..)

    okay, headline of the story below would be plain and simple,
    i cannot play any games based on the UNREAL3 engine..
    this includes MASS EFFECT, BIOSHOCK, and offcourse UT3
    after a long search the -nosound made the game at least bootable, but lets face it, a game without sound is boring and should be concidered not playable

    long version:

    ------------------------------------------------
    System info:
    CPU : E8500 @ 3800mHz (9.5x400)

    MEM : 4096GB Team Xtreem DDR2 @ 800mHz (400 x T2) @ 5-5-5-5-18 2.20V

    HDD : 2x Western Digital Raid Edition 250GB @ Raid-0 (striping) one partition

    GPU : Asus HD3870X2 (fanspeed faster to cool it better, card itself runs at stock) (Catalyst 8.7 (latest))

    MOBO : Asus Maximus Formula (Bios 1204 (latest))

    SOUND : Supreme FX II (the onboard/riser card from the mainbord)(latest drivers)
    SOUND2 : Creative X-Fi Audio (latest drivers)

    PSU : Gigabyte 800Watt PSU (software monitored)

    GPU-A : BFG PhysX by Ageia (PhysX 100 series)(latest drivers)

    OS : Windows Vista 64bits Dutch, Service pack 1 and all patches/updates applied

    the system is build in a Zalman GT-1000 case, and is rigged with PLENTY fans the overclock is 100% stable after a 8 hour orthos stress test, and all temperatures are well within limits

    3dMark 2006 score : 18543 (rawr)

    ------------------------------------------------

    In Advance.....:-\
    - allready did a clean boot, and reinstall UT3
    - Allready tried several soundcard and videocard drivers, as well as different bios versions
    - allready removed both soundcards to only have 1 actually there, (i DID disable the onboard one in the bios before removing the riser card)
    - reinstalled OpenAL
    - reinstalled DirectX 10
    - removed and reinstalled the soundcard and videocard drivers
    - tried running the game as administrator
    - tried running the game in all possible emulation modes
    - tried disabling OpenAL after getting into the game with -nosound option
    - tried these tricks
    UseMinimalNVIDIADriverShaderOptimization=True
    bInitializeShadersOnDemand=True
    DisableATITextureFilterOptimizationChecks=False
    PumpWindowMessagesWhenRenderThreadStalled=True
    OnlyStreamInTextures=True
    = allready put my system on stock speed, and repeat the above list.... (not joking)

    !---- allready called Midway UK several times (Thanks to Matt Knapman, unfortunatly we couldnt fix this issue)

    ----------------------------------------------

    the problem...

    the actual problem was a lockup of UT3.exe (stops communicating with windows yada yada yada) at the splash screen
    after investigating the issue at hand, i decided to call midway because this forum is a complete mess unless you know wich topics are actually usefull you spend at least an entire day browsing trough **** and spam
    after trial and error we pretty much tried allmost everything that might cause this, the 'normal" fixes simply have zero effect,

    however.. midway office closed, and at the end of the day all we found out is, that with -nosound it DOES START!!!
    however.. no sound.... sucks..
    im stubborn, and can be quite dedicated if i find something that interests me,
    and i spend the rest of the evening/night browsing trough the ini files along with trying any other thing i could come up that were related to my hardware

    after spending the rest of the night, i decided to try another UNREAL3 based engine, after downloading mass effect and bioshock for testing purposes, it turned out they have the same issues, however in this case, even -nosound wont help me so besides the link they share with their engine, this didnt really give me much news , bummer

    when i was editing the INI files,
    i was able to pinpoint the exact phraze that is causing all my troubles....
    when i edit
    [Engine.Engine]
    bUseSound=true
    and set this one to FALSE..
    nothing changes at all.. this option seems to have no effect at all

    However...
    [Engine.GameEngine]
    bUseSound=true
    when i change THIS one to False... the game starts up perfectly,
    i have sound at the videos and intro's
    however.. no sound in the menu, or actual game itself
    but this does make me wonder what on earth this problem can be,
    i really gave up,
    and so did the Midway support desk,
    were sort of stuck here,.. i hope any experienced troubleshooters, or perhaps Epic staff reads this problem and is/are able to give me a clue on what to do to fix this,
    midway said they would forward this issue to epic games itself, and they strongly adviced me to post here knowing that epic staff reads this forum

    i really hope you can give me any clue or advice and hopefully even a fix for this problem

    if there are any more questions id like to answer those as soon as i got time to read this post, to epic ppl, midway has my email and phone number added to the ticket and forwarded that somewhere to your company :P

    ////////////edit/////////////
    i ran intense tests on my comp with everest, scanning my hard disks and memory for possible flaws or corruption,
    they passed flawlessly

    okay, trivial. I know.
    But I'm assuming your sound cards have some type of active software that drives them right? kind of like the Catalyst Control Center for your vid card.

    If so...turn it off. then try.
    Also I recommend putting all the settings in your CCC to use "Application" settings.
    As I found this was a factor for me.

      been there, done that

      even uninstalling all creative software i could find, including a registry sweep afterwards,
      and letting the comp see my soundcard as a standard plug and play soundcard with stereo sound using only software emulation etc,
      no luck there either

      even with a completely clean boot it wont run when i only load the needed stuff

        so it doesn't boot at all under 'normal' settings??
        No error messages? anything?
        Assuming no one else has had this issue. It really has to be a system issue.
        it may perform well.
        but something in the system is causing the error it seems.
        But what's left to check, right???

          did you try it w/o the physics card???

            In your 'MyDocuments/MyGames/UT3/UTGame', there should be a startup log. I forget if it's under a 'Logs' folder or in the 'Config' folder. (at work) It should give an idea of where the game is having problems starting up.

            Since you said it plays with the -nosound and that you tried removing your software for your sound card with no luck . But did you try and remove the sound card itself from system to see if works then?

              yeah i tried it without the PhysX card,
              and well.. i do remember i played the UT3 demo, but i am not quite sure this was on this same system or my old comp..

              but yeah.. when it does run without the ingame sound, its max settings 1920x1200 no problems at all
              but its hard to believe this is a system issue, every other game plays perfectly,
              i have other games that use OpenAL.. they work..
              i have other games that use PhysX.. they work
              i have other games that use DirectX10.. they work
              well i can put an entire list of things that UT3 shares with other games,
              but for every thing i can name at least 2 games that DO run...
              and thats the main problem...
              now i could just reinstall windows entirely, but that is no where a promote that it WILL work after that,
              and besides that.. i REALLY dont feel like reinstalling windows entirely,
              specially not after spending hours and hours and hours to get windows running properly, and not to mention configuring those 60 addons i run in WoW :P

              im glad with my system, it works perfectly, its insanely fast, its completely stable at 3.8ghz (ive had it stable at 4.4 ghz, but i dont wanna cause too much wear and tear on my cpu)

              and at the end.. well... isnt this an Unreal-3 ENGINE issue ?
              since all games based on the unreal3 engine i tried, have exactly the same problems.. the only difference between those is, that UT3 actually DOES work without sound.. the other games dont work at all...

                as i said in my first post, i compeltely removed the soundCARD, and even disabled the onboard soundcard in the bios..
                i even flashed my bios to make sure thats not it
                and the other soundcard, well same story there, i completely removed all creative software AND hardware

                i think its pretty fair to say i tried pretty much any obvious, and as far as i can think, also any non-obvious solution.. and it all keeps coming down to the fact that no game with the unreal3 engine works at all

                and i have the idea that the sound-problems are not the actual problem anyway.. i think theres something else buggering...

                naturally, when i was looking at this problem with Midway Support desk,
                we checked the entire comp for any irq an dma adress errors and duplicates,
                midway has checked my sysinfo32 log, my directx 32 bits log and my directx 64 bits log..
                and there is simply no problem in those

                    Below is the startup log with
                    the

                    [Engine.GameEngine]

                    this will start the game, with the intro movies WITH sound..
                    but the moment the actual main menu arrives, all sound is gone,
                    however.. the FMV's do have sound..

                    wich makes sense.. since FMV's are pre-recorded, those dont use the engine itself, and thus have no problem..

                    the only strange thing in this list would be.... why on earth does the UT engine think i have an Pentium3

                      haha pentium 3. hardly, right?
                      uh, hmmm, sounds like a lead. Where to take it though.
                      i'm sure you've checked bios, and CPU drivers.

                      have you tried the onethread command????

                        yep,
                        and also tried setting the affinity once the UT3.exe has launched,
                        its very strange, but nothing seems to be working...
                        but the display of my cpu is definatly corrupt, specially concidering i seriously hope i have more than -1 L2 cache :P

                          yeah for sure.
                          So far it seems that's the only real half-solid info you have about any errors.
                          I would investigate that more.

                            what's this?

                            Init: GPU DeviceID not found in ini.

                            Also that last section in your last log file seems, wrong.
                            dunno if that could be a cause or not.
                            i'm pretty novice with these logs.

                            The CPU indentification problem seems odd.
                            Why won't it detect the correct CPU?
                            Under your hardware management tab in windows....
                            it gives the correct info, right?

                            Also have you tried running DXDIAG and comparing to see if there are issues that way???

                              the gpu device not found in .ini is pretty weird from epic's side tbh,
                              since the game does not identify my card as a HD3870x2 simply because there is no entry for my device in the list of possible gpu's, and thus no device ID gets allocated to my card,
                              but i doubt thats a problem tbh, since it works perfectly without sound :P

                              and yeah, directX 9+10 both show up the cpu correctly, and the correct bios is detected as well, and also the exact mHz shows up good so i dont think this cpu problem comes from my comp, i dont know where unreal gets it's system info from tbh, but if unreal detects its own current hardware config then that might be one of the issues here,
                              a unstable detection of the system..
                              and this again would lead back to the unreal engine, since every other program i tried and tested (gpu-z/cpu-z, everest, rivatuner, 3dmark2006, 3dmark 2004 and so on) all detect the system exactly as it is...

                              really strange here.. im absolutely stuck on what to try next, hopefully ppl have more ideas on this cuz im out of them
