is SP2 absolutely required?

my friend is having trouble with UT3 - he can't get more than a few frags in before it crashes.. we noticed the other night that the minimum requirements say SP2 or later - this is his backup computer and it has no SP2... we're thinking he'll have better luck with his real PC when it gets fixed (has SP2).. but for now - will UT3 run without SP2?

If it REQUIRE sp2 it will NOT START at all on PC with sp1. So it probably some errors with hardware or windows setup.
Better to INSTALL sp2, no matter which games you play. It will add some more security features to your system.

Well I have installed ut3 on a second computer to see if it works and it works fine without sp2.

this is XP Home i'm talking about.. i'm pretty sure.. see - it's my friend's PC - funny - he's Brian and i'm Ford.. lol...
