    Grand Prize Winners in the $1 Million Intel Make Something Unreal Contest!

    Grand Final Winners Awarded $175,000 in Cash and an Unreal Engine 3 License

    LAS VEGAS – 2010 D.I.C.E SUMMIT – February 17, 2010 – At a luncheon co-sponsored with Intel at this week’s 2010 D.I.C.E. Summit® ( in Las Vegas, Nevada, Epic Games, Inc. today announced the grand prize winners in its $1 Million Intel Make Something Unreal Contest. Designed to help independent and aspiring game developers learn Unreal Engine 3 technology and gain recognition for authoring high-quality game experiences, the competition rewards top modifications, or “mods,” created for “Unreal Tournament 3” with cash and hardware prizes in four preliminary phases and a grand final judging.

    The grand prize winning mod team was awarded an Unreal Engine 3 commercial license in addition to a check for $50,000, with runner-up winners receiving $40,000, $30,000, $20,000 and $10,000 in cash prizes. Educational category winners also received a total of $25,000 in cash, for a grand total well in excess of $1 million in cash and prizes awarded through all phases of the competition.

    First Place: The Haunted by Michael Hegemann and The Haunted Team
    Prize: $50,000 + commercial license for Unreal Engine 3

    Second Place: The Ball by Toltec Studios
    Prize: $40,000

    Third Place: Angels Fall First: Planetstorm by the AFF: Planetstorm team
    Prize: $30,000

    Fourth Place: Prometheus by Rachel Cordone and The Prometheus team
    Prize: $20,000

    Fifth Place: Hazard: The Journey of Life by Alexander Bruce
    Prize: $10,000

    The grand prize winners in the Educational category are recognized as follows:

    First Place: IT University of Copenhagen

    Prize: $10,000

    Second Place: Art Institute of California, L.A.

    Many exceptional mods are being ported to the recently released Unreal Development Kit (UDK), the free edition of Unreal Engine 3 that provides uncompromised access to the same award-winning toolset used by many of the world’s best game developers.                         As one of the main judges in this years competition, I can't express enough how much fun we had with all these mods. This year was even more difficult than usual, with so many strikingly diffferent mods and ambitious projects. Great job everyone, can't wait to see what comes next!!


                          Congrats all, it's been a blast! There's no question the winners deserve their recognition, amazing work! Thankfully the UDK makes it worthwhile for all us runner-ups, too


                            Congratulations to all the winners! I can remember the excitement well. The first MSUC was one of the major stepping stones that got me into the industry and probably the thing that got my foot in the door with Epic.

                            Hats off to everyone who gives up their free time and social lives in order to push the community forward.
