why not simply use the GUI system?
e.g. create a GUIPage that displays the map, you can capture all input via the GUI system.

    Suggestions:

    #1) New HUD
#2) Have the map draw, with x,y coordinates to tell where it is scrolled to
#3) HUD's can have commands, as in ShowMap *exec function ShowMap()* in M, and others like scroll up down left right*make urself
#4) the showmap toggles with a bDrawingMap bool

Here's what I'm trying to do:

While the user is in game give them the option of hitting the "m" button, if clicked it should display an overhead map(that would take up the entire screen, its really big), and because its so big it would allow them to scroll around it(so they can see the entire map, not all of it can fit on the screen). Eventually we might like them to be able to select items on the map, but thats not important right now.

    Here's what I got:
Capture the M button and display the overhead map. But I draw it on the HUD, so the game is still running in the background, and for how to get it to scroll around the map, I haven't the foggiest.

    Anyone have any suggestions?
