It’s more than possible that no one knows the answer to these questions but I thought I’d ask anyway

Is it true that maps for ut2004 have a theoretical limit of 17km²?
Have the larger maps been made possible by upgrading the engine or just scaling the world down?

“GameSpy: I also noticed that some of the levels were downright enormous. I was told that there's a theoretical limit of 17km square per map, yet the biggest map we saw (which was just enormous) was about a third of that size. Do you foresee a need for such enormous maps? How will they affect gameplay?”
