    .3DS vs. .ASE import types

    When I see tutorials that suggest importing models from 3DS Max as a .3ds file type I have to question this method. It seems doing it this way, involves a series of complicated scripting steps and stuff, not to mention there is finite limit on how many vertices can be imported using the .3ds file type (like 65,000 or something, large yes, but still a limit).

    Can someone tell me what benefit, if any, the .3ds file type has for importing meshes over the .ASE (ASCII) format?
