    Maya 4.5 ActorX to UT2003

    Hi,

I can export fine... models with collisions to Unreal Editor,

    BUT
so far I did not manage to get Hard/Soft Edge settings and Paint Vertex Color (tool) editing to show in UT2003 Editor...

Anyone out there knows how to do it... or is that simply not supported by the ActorX plugin?

    Thanks

Unfortunately, ActorX does not support the exporting of vertex colours from Maya.

As for hard/soft edges, there is an option to have them converted to smoothing groups when exporting the model, so just click that box.

I know but not working right

      HI,
      thanks for your reply

I did try that before posting...
but what happens is that on model with both hard and soft edges when showing in UT2003 only part of the hard edges show, some of the hard edges still show soft...

does it work fine for you?

      Thanks

        got it

Ok... I think we got it now..

because I was testing with simple obejcts liek a cylinder etc...
I was using ActorX autotriangulate option....this is what was gigving me strange results of course... since it creats new edges by itself and it may go banas on hard and soft on the new edges...

so if anyone had same overlooking issue...
make sure you triangulate before exporting as well as hard/soft edit all the new triangulated edges.. and it will work fine...

        I overlooked this step **** it :0)

Have you tried to export out your smoothed meshes to UED only using the Maya 4.5 plugin, and not with ActorX?

                what?

as far as I know ActorX is the only way to export a Maya model in a format (ASE) that UED can read....ActorX is a plug in.

if you know of any other way or plug in please tell me

Yes. there is another way. It's a plugin that came bundled with the UT2k3 CD. There is a newer build/version of Maya 4.5 that requires an updated plugin that you can download from multiple places. I don't remember where, right off the top of my head.

This is where you should go:

UnrealTechnology has a really nice VTM (video training module) that shows you how to get the latest plugin and install it correctly.

I export out directly from UED into Maya using it.

Yes. The PLE. It works great. Do you own a full out version of Maya 4.5?

I saw an ActorX demo for Maya 5.0 at Siggraph late last year, buy 3dBuzz.com. Logan demonstrated that it works pretty flawlessly. They were impressed. You might want to upgrade.

I should look into the upgrade and get my employer to pay for it
