Well, there's a limit on the number of path nodes you can have, including player starts, but you'd have to litter your level pretty thoroughly to get there.
It's always recomended to have more player starts in a map than the number of players you expect to be playing on it. This helps randomizing player spawn locations even with lots of players spawning at the same time.
LOL, OK OK, context: betatesting a new map 1 fellow claimed that you could only have 32 playerstarts. My reply was HUH? so I thought I'd ask here. BTW no errors on build and plays fine but I don't know if playerstarts #33-41 are being ignored?
