My idea is to implement a system like Mysterial's RPG mutator, but I have a grand plan of making some changes...
Instead of gaining levels which you then gain stats, and then abilities, you gain an experience currency that can be spent on "Magic Powers".
Are you familiar with the skill tree from Diablo 2? I see it working somewhat like that. Some powers can only be "purchased" when you already possess its prerequisite powers.
Powers can also be leveled up by purchasing them multiple times.
Magic Powers can be attacks, stat modifiers, and ability enhancers (Pretty much stuff that I can do with SwitchArsenal Classes.) I can also picture separating them into 6 elemental categories (I pretty much always use these six in my game ideas) Fire, Water, Earth, Air, Lightining, and Metal.
Of course, this thing has about the same chance as me getting 1st place in the MSU contest. Maybe after I get tired of coding for SwitchArsenal I'll consider it.
Sorry, I just love to spout off ideas at random sometimes.
